Kids' storage racks recalled after death Fri Nov 16, 9:31 AM ET

Some 36,000 Chinese-made children's storage racks sold at Wal-Mart Stores Inc (WMT.N) in the United States were recalled after a baby was suffocated by an overturned rack, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said on Friday.

The wooden storage rack, manufactured for Irving, Texas-based Jetmax International Ltd, has three levels and nine removable canvas totes, the safety agency said. One model has red, blue, yellow and green canvas totes, and another model has pastel-colored canvas totes.

An 8-month-old boy suffocated after he pulled on a storage rack and it fell over on him, with the top rail landing on his neck, the government agency said.

Wal-Mart sold the storage rack organizers under the brand "Home Trend Kids" from August 2004 through July 2005 for about $40, the agency said. The product was also sold at Ollie's stores from July 2006 through June 2007.

Consumers should immediately stop children from using the recalled storage racks and contact Jetmax International to receive a free repair kit that adds stability to the base of the rack, the agency said.

The CPSC posted photographs of the recalled item on its Web site at http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml08/08085.html

you have to be kidding. there is nothing wrong with this item. this is the parents trying to shift blame. this is neglect on the parents for leaving a child this young unsupervised. this could have been avoided if the child was being watched

lazy parents screw over us good ones

i have a similar toy shelf system

added these are recommended for kids 2 and up

Thanks for the warning. This is pretty disturbing that we have things like this for infants anyway. People need to be more careful when they are dealing with children. Kids can't put up with as much as an adult. They are still very vulnerable. Honestly though, the parents should have though out what they were doing more carefully before putting something like that in an 8-month old's room and someone should have been watching him. 8-months is too young to be leaving children by themselves. They don't know what is good for them and what can harm them. Parents need to start taking more responsibility for their own kids and stop putting all the blame on every other company. Sometimes the person who you should put the blame on is yourself. If you did everything right then you can start pointing fingers at someone else. However, if there was a chance where you could have prevented the occurrence then you are the first person that should be blamed for the accident. Simply, if you aren't mature enough to take care of a child, don't have one. Keep your legs closed. I am so tired of preaching this same message. Especially when people don't listen. Everyone thinks their way is right and won't listen to advice. Sometimes guess what people your answers are wrong. Sometimes you need help from somebody else.

What sort of parent leaves their 8-month-old child alone long enough to actually pull the storage rack down and suffocate from it? This sounds much more like an issue of neglect than it does a poorly-made product.

I'm not sure what the question is...but I'll comment.

I think it's ridiculous that they would have to recall this furniture item. Furniture falls over when kids climb on it, that is why you secure it to the wall...
I feel awful for the parents, but it's not the product or companies fault.

uhh maybe the parents should have been watching their kid. It seems like that could happen with anything if it landed the right way.
