The UK voltage of 240 volts a.c. is more than double the American mains supply voltage of 110 volts a.c. and will therefore pass more than FOUR times as much electrical current through an American device which uses pure resistance (like an electric iron). Unless something limits this current it is going to burn out pretty quickly.

Electronic components in e.g audio devices also can be easily damaged by overvoltage.

You can buy a transformer in e.g. amateur electronics shops in Britain which will convert 240 volts a.c. to 110 volts a.c. but first look for the power rating of the devices you want to run: transformers come with different power ratings -
from 8 watts (costing about £9.00) for e.g electric toothbrush charger or phone charger.
to 20 watts (costing about £30.00) for e.g smaller audio equipment and so on.
Any of the larger rated transformers will be at least the size of a shoe box and weigh several pounds.

TIPS:

- Leave power hungry devices, like hair driers, at home.

- Check the voltage ratings embossed on your devices - some devices CAN accept higher voltages safely (though this may be less likely in American devices than European ones). '
V' is the voltage rating in volts,
'W' is the power in watts,
'A' is the current in amperes.

- Cellphone chargers for most phones can be bought reasonably cheaply in High Street cellphone shops in the UK.

- If someone sells you an adaptor that is small and feels lightweight, it is NOT a transformer type and it WILL blow up your American electrical device.

Ignore ac, iamtoopr and VB - they are talking rubbish.

US uses 110 volts UK uses 220-240 volts. Commons sense should tell you that even with the correct adaptor to change the flat two pins on US appliances to UK three pin, you will still have too high a voltage. This could easily mean burn out since the insulation standards on US products are not high enough for the greater voltage.

You could also end up with either, burning out the wiring on the appliance, fusing the circuit, burning down the house or killing yourself or others!

Electrons flow in the UK, the same as they do in the USA

We can even change a USA plug to a safe UK one

We don't like US TV standard, it's rubbish

We can hear the same audio range as Americans

Your question is so vague, there's no specific answer
to give other than you need a transformer

UK 230 V USA 115 V

although many USA appliances run on 230 especially if they are high current (like washing machines) Americans have transformers that step up, to save on expensive cables!

That's a loaded question. The answer is sometimes.

As you may know, the voltage and plugs differ. But even taking that into account, you may have problems depending on which appliance.

For instance, most kitchen appliances would be fine. You will have problems with a TV unless you plan on using a cable feed, but not a radio. A DVD player will work but only with American DVDs. The type sold in Europe won't work. Do your research on the appliance itself before purchase.

Yes, they will - but you will need an electrical plug converter and converter hi/low box. The UK electric is more powerful than the American electrical goods can handle.

If you only get a plug converter and not the little converter box that goes with, you may blow out the item.

Hope that information is helpful.

Quick answer NO NO NO !!!

Adaptors won't do, they just allow you to use the plugs.
The voltage over here in UK (240v) is twice that in US (115v).
Plug an American device in here and it will more likely blow up.
(There are some things like a laptop which are adaptable, but most domestic units like a hair dryer are not suitable).

No.

At least, not without a voltage adapter. The USA and UK have different standards for their electricity, and electical devices ahve to be designed for one or the other standard.

But the adapters are simple and easy to find.
