My boyfriend renewed his tax online but failed to change it over. So, although he has upto date tax the disc diplayed in the car is out of date. Is this an offence? Does anyone know what the fine would be? The police have put a notice on the car saying they have sent information to the DVLA. Presumably they'll say the car is taxed and it'll be ok???

The reason he did not replace it was because the car was broken into and the windscreen was replaced, along with the door and lock. It slipped his mind. Obviously he's replaced it now but the police have already sent the details on. I just wanted to know how much he is likely to be fined.
Thanks all you sarcastic people, why bother answering if you're just being rude?

I wont be rude or sarcastic, I’ll answer sensibly with as much knowledge as I can offer.
The offence here is failing to display a valid vehicle excise licence (tax disc). This is a DVLA offence and not a Police matter. The Police only inform DVLA.
If your boyfriend tells the DVLA what you have detailed here regarding the windscreen being replaced after a theft from the vehicle then I wouldn't have thought that would be a problem. The fact that he has purchased a, traceable, new, valid tax disc should go in his favour. A crime reference number for the theft would also add weight to the explanation.
I can’t advise you on the amount of the fine, if you do get one but wish you luck in getting it sorted!

Yes you can be fined for not displaying the tax disc. I believe the fine is around 60 pounds. I think your boyfriend should be fine because the dvla will know that his car is taxed.

Technically yes, but in practice it's unlikely so long as you can prove you had a valid tax disc at the time.
The law states that the road fund license disc must be displayed in the lower passengers side corner of the windscreen, but it's unlikely you'll get done for it if you can prove you had a disc and it just fell off teh windscreen.

While you could appeal it if you had been fined while waiting to receive it, if it isn't replaced immediately on receipt, you can get fined.
The DVLA will be able to show when they sent your man his new disc. You could always say it got held up in the post but I doubt that will wash.
His own forgetfulness isn't an excuse.

Failing to display a tax disc is an offence, whether or not you are taxed. But you should be able to appeal a fixed penalty

There is a specific offence of failing to display a vehicle excise licence. Once reported to the DVLA they will check thsat there is a current one in force. If he receives a summons for failing to display it is usually a warning or a small fine. Don't worry.

You NEED to change it. It is very important to be displaying a valid tax disk, otherwise the police can tow your car and impound it.
