there are many different reasons why people cut. one of the main reasons is to turn emotional pain into physical pain, which can be controlled. people often do it when they feel a lack of control over their life. it can also be so that the person feels something - some people feel completely numb, and need to feel pain or see blood to remind themselves that they are alive. also, the pain releases endorphins that make the person feel 'good', and it is these endorphins that become addictive. also, some do it as they want to see the blood - they feel the pain washes out of their body with the blood. others just need to see a lasting mark upon their skin. some do it as a cry for help when they feel that there is no other way to express their pain and how they truly feel. others do it for self-punishment - when they feel they have done something really wrong and need to be punished for it. others, though only a VERY SMALL NUMBER of people do it for attention - these people often show off their cuts (or any other marks of self harm). MOST PEOPLE however actually hide their cuts/marks/scars and feel ashamed about it or regret doing it, so people that say self harmers do it for attention are completely wrong. mainly, self harm is caused by some form of abuse, mental illness or low self esteem. it IS NOT a suicide attempt - self harm is used as a coping method to try to prevent the killing of oneself, though those who self harm are more likely to kill themselves.

the reason he may be lying is that he is trying to protect himself. i think he may be in denial that someone has found out about his cutting, and so is making up obviously untrue reasons for the cuts in an attempt to reassure himself that you don't really know, and that his secret is safe. however, he may be making up these unbelieveable excuses in an attempt to get you to realise that he is self harming (which you have already realised, unknown to him) and he is getting more ridiculous to try and prove to you that it must be him doing it - he may be lying as a cry for help. or, as he is showing off the cuts, and making up these obvious lies, he may be doing it for attention, so really you need to judge on why he may be lying, and whether or not you should help him.

the fact that he won't leave you alone could suggest he trusts you, and that, because he knows you know about his cuts, he wants you to help him. first, research a bit about self harm so that you are not a complete alien to it, and so that you can connect with him a bit. sit down and have a private, and as relaxed as possible, talk with him, to try and find out what is really causing him to cut - be warned, that if he is in denial, he may get really defensive, and insist that the lies he has already told you are true - he may even truly believe they are true. if he does talk, encourage him to get professional help from a doctor, counsellor or psychiatrist, so that he may be given antidepressants or any other needed medication, as well as help to find the root cause of the problem. if he won't get help, encourage him to use an alternative to cutting, such as snapping an elatic band against his wrist, or drawing on himself with red pen, or squeezing an ice cube in his hand. if you want more alternatives, email me. he needs help, in one form or another, as self harming is addictive, and can lead to major scarring, if not worse injuries. please help him, or get him to get help from another person, as it can be hard, if not almost impossible, to stop the cycle of harm without another person's help.

good luck with helping this guy, i wish you both all the best.

and sorry for such a long answer! i hope it has helped!

There's two types of people who do this, there's the kind who do it because there depressed and use the pain as a sort of release but these people tend to try and keep quiet about it. And then there's the people who do it for attention which sounds like the person you know if he's constantly showing them off and telling really obvious lies, then that's why he doe's it, for attention

sometimes by cutting it releases stress and pressure that you feel inside that you dont know how else to release. this stress or pressure can come from anyone or anything as well as be part of a mental problem your friend may have. perhaps if you talk to him and express your concern and suggest he see a doctor who would be able to listen to him and refer him for the medical help he obviously needs. people do things for reasons there is always an underlying reason why, and he may not realise it yet either.

I'm a cutter, but I don't lie about them, you ask I tell ya. This guy almost sounds like he wants approval or attention, almost a cry for friends. He might have some under lying issues that he'll need to talk about with a professional. It's not normal to continually lie..Good Luck

This is a difficult one. It is usually a lack of self esteem.
A need for control or just attention seeking.
Whatever this guy has major problems. He needs help.

Well I think that their heart hurts so bad they don't want it to hurt so they think the pain can go to their arms.. It is kinda scary.
