Black spots (floaters) are common in a lot of people, but black lines are not as .common

First possibility:
If you were to peel an eyeball (I know, it sounds gross), the clear material left would look like a clear Jello jiggler. Though made up of almost entirely water, there is a "chemical" that gives it its Jello-like structure. Now here's the problem... in older people the "chemical" decreases and causes the the eyeball to become filled (more or less) with liquid. Both are transparent, but there can be what appears to be a line between the various areas..

Second possibility
You may have had a tissue separationr in your eyeball and the line is the shadow on your retina from the material floating around.

Third possibility:
A serious eye problem (retinal detachment)

NO MATTER WHAT THE CAUSE, you need to see an Ophthalmologist soon. If you also see flashes of light (like a strobe light or lightning), you need to see the doctor REAL soon.

I know that this all sounds scary. Believe me, I went though this same thing in September '06. Fortunately, it wasn't serious and I've been left with a huge floater that is gradually going away.

Check the link below for a real good article on floaters.

Good luck aqnd see the doc soon!
