There some truth to costs of parts being higher cost than Japanese or American makes, but its also party due to simple economics of the situation.
The Euro is trading at all time highs against the dollar: the other day, the Euro has hit 1.46 against the USA dollar, the highest its ever been; remember at one time the Euro cost as little as 83 cents to buy a few years ago, so the Euro has gained 80% against the dollar. The Japanese Yen has gained only slightly against the dollar, about 8-10% against the dollar, so items from Japan have not had huge price issues against them.
Another factor in this is simply the number of vehicles sold. Honda and Toyota simply sell more vehicles than any of the European makes all put together! I don't have the figures, but I seem to remember that the Toyota Camry outsold every car last year and that model alone out sold VW, Audi, Porshe, and Saab combined.
Since prices for parts are partially based upon movement, if there are few vehicles to sell parts for, then of course, the parts for a vehicle that have fever potential sales will be higher.
Having said that, your possible choice of a 97 model Golf could be a good one. That year is one of the better years to own as its far more reliable than the later generation models.
It may be slightly spartan in the interiror vs the newer generation, but is far less expensive to run and maintain. The only rear sore point is the automatic transmission, which I would stay away from.
It is not any requirement of course that you buy your parts at the dealership; for an a/c compressor, many companies in the aftermarket (non VW) rebuild the compressors and you can buy a exchange rebuilt compressor for very little money.
If the condition, the price and milage meet with your approval, then the 1997 Golf could be a very good bet for you.
It drives well, has a decent ride and the depreciation is on the low side.
I hope this helps, a car nut.

any part you buy from any dealer or maker is going to be expensive. the Golf is a great car, if maintained properly can last 700-800k. can you say that about a JAP trap or a domestic? I will answer that for you, NO. The VW are like no other cars in its class any one that compares a VW to a jap car does not know spit. You can find after market parts that are a better deal but I wouldn't put in it the car.

I think it's better if you buy from direct manufacturer or supplier of auto parts. Not only that they have the stocks you need available, they can also give the car parts at a discounted price. Go and check out Prime Choice Auto Parts and let me know what you think of them. Hope this helped.

they are not as cheap to repair as a American car.
but are no more expensive than a Japanese import..
i think they are a much better car than most imports.
i put 1,000 miles on a new jetta rental last week.
i was very happy with the car.. i found very few things i didn't like about it..that is much more than i can say about any car from japan...the Honda and Toyota fans are the ones you hear screaming bad things about the vw...

Guy I car pool with had and I say HAD a Pasat.
Rotors DESIGNED to wear out with the pads to prevent squeel, lost an alterntor,,Dealer had to pull the COMPLETE FRONT CLIP of the car to change it and that is the correct way to do it and it went on and on..He leased it and turned it in as soon as he could.
Go for the American cars for least expensive parts, easy to get parts and best safisfaction.
Checked with Auto Zone with your problem. They do not carry your compressor, but the evaporator for example is $219.99 on similar year Chevy truck..$119.99

False. Also, you'll be fixing it less often than some other cars. VWs are very good cars.

so very true - it's not even funny.
Not only are the parts more expensive that a American - or other foreign car - but the labor rate is also much more than a domestic auto
