The only real problem in the Med was at the Straits of Gibraltar. They lost tremendous shipping to wolfpack sub forces. The solution was a base at the rock of Gibraltar. they were able to run off the wolfpacks and get control of this vital lane for men, munitions and materiel that were needed for the war effort. The base is a source of contention today. Governments are fighting over the rock and removal of the British base there.

Basically it was the U-Boats but because the British controlled Gibraltar and the small canal between Gibraltar and North Africa leading into the Mediterranean the British could stop U-Boats coming in and the British had lots of air power which eventually led to victory.

The British destroyed the Italian fleet at Taranto using Swordfish Aircraft fitted with shallow water Torpedoes. The Japanese were so inspired by this that they did the same at Pearl Harbour!
The Straits of Gibraltar were feared by U Boat crews as it was a black zone for them. Also the British had some Air Power on Malta (the island was awarded The George Cross for its bravery). Thought you'd like to know that. Lots more to read up of course.

I think there were also U-Boat problems by Suez Canal also.

Also, the majority of the Italian Navy was in the Mediterranean, so they had to be defeated. The British held Malta and eventually destroyed the Itilian Navy. Then with the exception of the Uboats, they controled the Med.
