HD DVD, I have had the Toshiba HD-A2 since after New Year's '07 and love it. It had some issues with Universal Combos (HD DVD on 1 side/ standard to play in any player on the other), and a couple firmware updates solved that problem.
HD DVD is more affordable than blu-ray, most blu-ray owners are PS3 owners, as apposed to stand alone blu-ray players. My player is connected to the internet through ethernet cable, for firmware updates and on-line HD DVD content.
Both upscale to HD resolutions, 720 & 1080 through HDMI.
Both have various movies only available in HD on certain formats, due to movie studio preferences/ contracts.
The video and audio for both is amazing if fed to a compatible HDTV, like my Sharp Aquos in 1080p. Audio is HDMI to the TV, but it also has optical out to connect to the 5.1 surround receiver.
I say both will give you HD quality, HD DVD is more affordable, and watch for which movies you like in their chosen format.
PS just don't ditch your old player, becasue some children's DVD games don't work with my HD-A2, some other formats may not be playable either, like DVD's you may have burned, DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD-RW, etc...Most do play though.
Good luck! "Transformers" in HD DVD is FREAKING AWESOME!!! I'm just not giving Sony any more of my money, I game in HD on my PC, so I don't need the PS3.

I would say wait another year. What's the hurry. The technology is new and unproven. The quality of the hardware itself still has a lot of bugs. The players are very expensive and the movies are split-up. Disney has an exclusive contract with Sony, but MGM has exclusive contract with HD-DVD. When normal DVD players came out, they were also very expensive, but with time they went down in price significantly. One thing that everyone seems to agree about, is that only one HD format is the format of the future, so why spend $600-$800 on something you have no certainty about. I personally have a PS3 with Blu-Ray, but I mainly use it for gaming. Movie picture and sound qualities are amazing, but if Blu-Ray fails as an HD winner, I won't care because I like watching my movies in the theater.

Get Blu-Ray. Sony is top notch when it comes to consumer electronics plus BLU-RAY uses far more sophisticated technology for the same price. Movie producers prefer Blu-Ray because of its phenomenal storage space, meaning for a movie in which you would ordinarily use 3 DVD or HD-DVD disks, you only use one for BLU-RAY. This means all the special features, sometimes both the full screen and widescreen versions, the commentaries, all go on one disk, instead of 2. This saves storage space in the long run.
Also, forget what happened in the 80's. Things are a little different now.
Re: Top notch, in terms of company efficiency and market viability, "flugger", meaning Sony will win out the HD war against Toshiba because Sony is way better at marketing their products. Lol, get a life, there's more important things to have a cow about, you look like you're gonna have a heart attack up there.

Blu-ray it has outsold HD-DVD in terms of movies and players every single week of this year. Blu-ray also has more support from the movie industry. It's also better technology it has more capacity and the disks themselves are scratch proof. Consider a PS3. It's a great Blu-ray player and it also lets you play HD games, surf the web, display your pictures, play your music, etc..

I've read that some analysts are predicting BluRay to win out... if that happens, HD-DVDs would probably go away (as that's what happened with BetaMax)
There are DVD players out there that will play both BluRay and HDDVD.
In my opinion, those players will probably be the winner and both formats will stay around (though not all movies would be available on both formats for some time)

I would buy the HD DVD. I don't think one is easier than the other, but I do think Blu-ray will eventually fall by the wayside like Beta did to VHS.
