We got a miniture schnauzer about 2 months ago, she seems like such a sweet dog, but now she always barks and grawls at everyone. And when my baby tries to go to her she jumps and scratches him everytime. Is she a trainable dog? My husband thinks she is dumb. I have been trying to work with her, by teaching her to sit, stay, and to settle down but she just doesnt seem to want to learn. Did I get a bad dog?

That is not a dumb dog.. schnauzers are extremely intelligent .. too much so.. (they are stubborn though) You need someone who knows how to train schnauzers.. The barking is difficult to get around.. (not all schnauzers get to that point, but once they do it's hard to stop them).. The jumping up is pretty easy to stop, but you have to ALL be consistent..

One of the problems with the breed is that they think too much like humans. Repeating the same thing over and over bores them.. and they stop paying attention. Most will pick up what you want after the first or second attempt.. but will revert if allowed .. constantly doing the same thing doesn't work.. So, when training you have to vary it a bit.. do a few minutes with one thing.. (sitting for example) and then a few minutes of something else .. Try to keep them thinking and interested.

I am amazed that you are saying that. Miniture Schnauzer are highly intelligent and they are a pleasure to have around the house. I had a schnauzer for 12 years and she was just the sweetest thing. After she passed away, I got another schnauzer this time a male, he is only 4 months old and I have already taught him to sit, down, give me 5, speak, and wait. And he is paper trained. Maybe you need to take him to an obeidence class, they actually are teaching you how to teach the dog. Good luck, and I hope it works out for you, because schnauzers are fantastic dogs.

Find a good trainer, start taking an obedience class. I train my dogs in Obedience and Protection Sport. Don't listen to that person that said to train without distractions....you want to train in all environments with noise, and people, cause if you only train in secluded places then what are you going to do when there is a distraction? Trust me on this, I do Protection sport and that is the highest form of Obedience and we train with noise and other dogs around and people and other forms of distractions. It is very important to have control of your dog in any situation. Change up the environment when you practice. Be sure to give the dog plenty of exercise, when a dog that is high driven does not have an outlet then it will resort to being frustrated and thats when bad things can happen. Be sure to not use too much compulsion as this could cause the dog not to trust you, you want to build the dogs confidence and trust. Use something that motivates the dog, treats, or a ball, his favorite toy...whatever it takes. The dog will learn, you just need to be trained on how to handle the dog. Good luck to you.

I agree to the post that said to train with no distractions. It's hard for them to learn when it's noisy. Also, when there is a bad behavior, you need to ignore the puppy. Sometimes you can train better with the dog on a leash. If the dog acts up, you take her into an unoccupied room and stand there with her, but don't look or talk to her. Wait until she is calm and you bring her back out. You repeat this when she acts up and eventually, she will get the hint that bad behavior does not get attention.

Training is the best bet. Check out books, DVD's on training or even go to a certified reputable trainer.

When you work with your dog try being in a room with just you two, no phones T.V or other distractions. Always use eye contact and keep your voice steady and calm. When she dose it right praise her so she knows she did something right.

I was told my dog was dumb as a rock and would never learn anything and I believed it. Finally I decided to really sit down with him and try to teach him something. He is 10 years old and it only took me a month to teach him to sit, stay, roll over, shake, and speak. Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks. So if you are REALLY willing to work with your dog then you can get results. Good luck!

A dog should be trained on how to eat, walk with you, not to bark, potty training and sleep on its place etc. You can teach anything to your puppy, dogs get trained easily with some good instructions. If you want some good training tips visit https://tr.im/H6FOU

If properly trained, they should also understand whistle and gesture equivalents for all the relevant commands, e.g. short whistle or finger raised sit, long whistle or flat hand lay down, and so on.

It's important that they also get gestures and whistles as voice may not be sufficient over long distances and under certain circumstances.

Your dog is not dumb. The Miniature schnauzer is on 12th place our of 80 when it comes to intelligence and obedience. I have a friend who has a miniature schnauzer who had basic training and the dog is a delight to have around. You need help to bring the best out of your dog. Investing a little bit of money in training is worth it.

Find a class so you can learn how to train your pup. Get some really good treats and use them to get the dog's attention and reward her when she does something good, like look at you when you say her name or she sits. If she is growling there is a chance that she is afraid of the baby. Don't let the baby near her. You should learn about triggers, thresholds, counter conditioning and desensitization.

mini schnauzers are big dogs trapped in a little dog's body, lol. i started training my mini not to do those things almost from the day i brought her home. i read every book at the library on mini schnauzers and just dog training books in general. mine will play with all three of my kids and my husband, growling and barking, but as soon as we say "easy" very firmly, she knows it is time to stop. get a book on minis. they are not dumb, contrary to what your husband thinks. they are very smart, they are just a little stubborn/hardheaded. you could try a training class, as i am sure with a baby it is overwhelming trying to train the dog. but, keep doing what you are doing. schnauzers are very loyal to the family and very protective verbally, so they may bark at strangers until you let them know it is ok. i have had mine for two years, and she is like a little person. she will "talk" to me, and my husband is like "how do you know what she wants?" i just do, you learn as you go. before you know it, with maybe a training class and or reading up on the mini, your dog will settle in. good luck.

the female can loose her existence at the same time as whelping the clutter! The heads of pitbull doggies are larger than schnauzer doggies (for this reason the cervical putting out on the schnauzer might possibly be toooo small) and handing over the puppies certainly ought to effect in caught doggies and kill the female.
