Can ibs sufferers eat or drink lots of dairy products i.e cheese. milk and anything else in that catagory. Also what about crisps, chocolate (just the normal stuff). Can somebody give me an idea please?

Hello,

IBS comes in so many forms its impossible to answer! Unfortunately its a pretty generic term for all sorts of tummy troubles, but common triggers are fatty foods and some dairy (for me, anyway), but it can differ enormously between sufferers. It could be that you have a more specific intolerance, rather than IBS. Sometimes I can eat whatever I want and be fine, others a slice of wholemeal toast will give me crippling spasms. The life on an IBS sufferer is full of surprises!!!

Seriously though, if you haven't been to the docs for a proper diagnosis, do go. Best to get other stuff ruled out and all that. If you have been, theres a few good websites (just do a search) and several IBS cookbooks. I have one, will go look at the title and author and edit my answer for you.

IBS sufferers are advised to avoid dairy products. There is much advice available to sufferers. I would recommend buying Patrick Holfords book, Improve your digestion. It's not good news about chocolate either. I'd recommend getting the book. There's a great deal of advice about ibs in it.

Foods that make it worse:
fatty foods, like french fries
milk products, like cheese or ice cream
chocolate
alcohol
caffeinated drinks, like coffee and some sodas
carbonated drinks, like soda

Fiber may reduce the constipation associated with IBS because it makes stool soft and easier to pass. However, some people with IBS who have more sensitive nerves may feel a bit more abdominal discomfort after adding more fiber to their diet. Fiber is found in foods such as breads, cereals, beans, fruits, and vegetables.

Examples of foods with fiber include

Fruits Vegetables Breads, cereals, and beans
apples
peaches broccoli (raw)
cabbage
carrots (raw)
peas kidney beans
lima beans
whole-grain bread
whole-grain cereal

You really need to keep a food diary so you will know which foods bother you and which ones do not. As others have said, it really varies with the individual as to what foods cause problems. For me, poultry and eggs make me very sick, but I have no problems with dairy. Everyone is different.

You have to find out which food makes you suffer. Everyone gets pains from different foods.

I don't think fats and acids and even sometimes fruits helps it at times. You just have to find the ones you are ok with, trial and error I'm afraid.

I eat all of the above along with my favourite spicy food. Just make sure you drink lots of water - lots! Keep the 'juices flowing' as it were ;)
