I am 55 and quite healthy but my knees hurt, do not work very well and are weak. For instance, I dare not squat down because I would never be able to get up. I don't know what it is. I never have any swelling, redness, or heat. I do not fit the profile of arthritis, as far as I know. Any suggestions? And would exercising my knees make them stronger or just wear them out quicker?

sounds like classic arthritis symptoms. Exercise will help alot, just make sure that is is low impact, range of motion, like bicycle riding or swimming. leg curls with weights will also help. Building the muscle around the joint will take some of the stress off of it, and your pain should decrease significantly. You should get checked by a doctor, so go to an orthopaedist of a sports medicine doctor. They see knee problems every day and can be much more knowledgable
than a general practitioner.

i have rheumatoid arthritis, and my doctor told me that a way to help with the pain and weakness is to strengthen your leg muscles. an easy way to do that is to just tighten your thigh muscles for ten seconds, and release...do that for a minute or so, and just do it throughout the day. you can do this while you are sitting. also doing other exercises to strengthen your legs would help.
