Our Bull Terrier b*tch was x-rayed yesterday and needed an ultrasound to determine if she was truly pregnant or having a false pregnancy. One puppy was found on the ultrasound. In past experiences we have found b*tches often do not go into labor on their own when having a singleton. What day of her pregnancy do we do the section? Thanks-

Okay, again, frequently, at least in my breed, a b*tch with a singleton does not have enough hormone to start labor. This is a fact. Also, to the person who suggested spaying, I am a breeder/owner/handler of Bull Terriers, This was a planned breeding! GEEZ!
Thank you to all those who understood the situation and responded as they did. We will do the section on Day 63.

Ideally you want to get as close to the due date as possible. Unfortunately, even if the Section is done a few days early the puppy can be in a lot of danger. Gestation for dogs is very short (only 63 days on average), so even if the b*tch delivers 3 days early the puppy could suffer the same health issues as a premature human baby. Most commonly, undeveloped lungs and survival rate is not good.

If your b*tch can make it until day 63 that is the ultimate goal, I would not let her go past day 65 without delivering. However, in the mean time, if she starts labor on her own or starts to show signs of distress then it is time to contact your veterinarian. I would not Section her until day 63 if it can be avoided.

I go to a vet that attends to Bulldogs on a regular basis... She recommends scheduling a c-section on day 63 from the date she ovulated. Look up articles by Dr. Hutchinson in Ohio..he is a breeding expert and most likely you will find something regarding a c-section.

good luck with your new baby!!

the vet will decide when it should be done... what will happen is the day the vet will do the c-section, you will have to take her, have the procedure done and within about an hour and a half to two hours you will be able to take her and the pup home.. once the mom is home check her incision several times a day and if there are problems call your vet, the chances of that happening are very slim, she will be very sluggish after the section and will have to be helped out to relieve herself, she might have an accident, but be patient, she will also not know what had happen but at the vets they will introduce the puppy to her, if you want more info look on line for more detailed information... good luck...

They do go into labor. They just have trouble passing a larger puppy. You let them labor a few hours to see if they can pass it and then decide whether or not to section. Did they see only one on x-ray? It is easier to see on X-ray than on sonogram, so it if were just sonogram, I would question it.
You section on day 63 just like a regular multiple pregnancy.

I'd plan on doing it on day 60 if it were my girl. However, the only singleton litter I've ever had the vet scheduled the c-section for Monday morning - day 61- and she successfully whelped Saturday on day 59.

Good luck!!

The vet that did the x-ray should tell you that.
