no, you want to take EFA's with a meal. if they are consumed alone they may be metabolized and used as energy. there would be absolutely no benefit from taking them while you are exercising. most likely the person you were talking to got branched chain amino acids (BCAA) and essential fatty acids mixed up, BCAA's you can take while exercising

it is good to take omega-3 any way cause they are good for ur blood it is a good idea to take when working out so i think u should keep taking them but take a break from them once in a while cause they r a blood thinner also.
