what do u get out of it? it is okay if u say a lie for a good reason. otherwise it is bad that a person is unable to tell the truth and this makes a person weak. the one who has got the guts to tell the truth is the one who can get on well in life with full dignity

Is it bad to tell lies?

If you do not like someone do you have to tell them - surely even not telling them is itself a lie?

In family life most members will tell different family members something unpleasant in different ways depending on which family member they are talking to. Which version is true, which a lie?

If someone is terrified of dying and they have been seriously injured do you tell them they will be OK or baldly say you are going to die?

Where does humanity come into it?

There are surely good lies and occasions when telling the truth would be hurt full and far worse than telling the truth.

Telling lies is bad because you are deceiving the person, and leading them away from knowledge and understanding.

When you lie to someone, you are thwarting their attempt to gain knowledge, which attempt is the purpose of life as a human.

This knowledge and understanding leads to enlightenment, and you are therefore holding a person back from gaining enlightenment, and that is an act of ill will.

Of course there are exceptions. It is always all right if it saves a life. You can repent for lying, but not for being responsible for a death.

First, you need to define "bad." Bad in what way? Does it hurt someone? Do you profit wrongly from your lies? Religion seems to be OK with the huge lies it foists on people.

Lying is fine as long as you don't lie to me or yourself.

For everyone saying it's never ok:

If you had a Jewish family hiding in your house during Nazi occupation and a Nazi officer knocked and your door and asked: Any Jews in your house?

Should you tell him the truth?

Lying is wrong because if literally everyone did it literally all the time, it would make language meaningless. Also, in order to lie convincingly, it helps to half-believe the lie oneself, and since this is not consistent with reality, it divides one's identity and so injures the soul. It is impossible to be happy if one's soul is divided against itself.

Colossians 3:9
Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices

Revelation 21:8

But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”

Lying is not good, religious or not. Who wants to be lied to. Your misleading someone and your not being honest.
