Our thermostat is set at a constant 60 degrees F. We live in Idaho, high mountain desert, 4700 plus feet. Plant zone 4, borderline 3.
It's already snowed here several times this year. Winters are long and brutal in this part of the U.S.
We live on a farm, and end up going outside a great deal during the day. Because of this, we dress in longjohns, under our clothes.
It's easier to keep our house cool, than to change clothes multiple times a day, in a house that is too warm. This way we only have to pull on our insulated bib overalls, and coats when we go outside.
Saves propane, which saves us money, also helps the environment.
Drawback is we tend to die of heat stroke when we go to a friends house. Funny thing is, when friends come over to our house, they do not suffer. We provide really good/hearty food made from scratch, and warm beverages. Everyone is usually active playing a game too. We also have lap blankets tossed on couches/chairs everywhere. People never complain about being cold in our house.
You should ask this question in the environmental section also.

Well since the thermostat is busted....I think its set on 60 but not sure during the day I turn it down to 50 unless it will be less than 30 out then we are mandated( I rent) to set it at 65 so pipes don't freeze. In the summer no a/c unless we are home then I set it on 70. We live in KS where temps go from 20 or lower in winter to 110+ in summer.

During the summer I will set the thermostat at 82 degrees when I'm not going to be home for a couple days. In the winter I set it for 58 degrees. And yes, this does reduce my energy costs considerably.
I live in North Texas.

I set it to 65 when I'm home in the evening, 62 while I'm at work and 58 while I sleep. I wish I could set them lower, but it gets cold in the winter in Chicago. As far as the first poster about leaving it set, that's contrary to what conservationists claim. It makes no sense to keep your house warm for 8-10 hours when you aren't there. Your heat will turn on over and over, rather than once to rewarm it.

Regardless of where you live, you should set your thermostat for one temperature and leave it there. Changing the temp constantly only increases the amount of energy your home uses, which raises your energy bills drastically and uses up precious natural resources. Find a temp that works for you in each of the seasons, only change it when the outside weather changes for a new season, and keep it that way until the weather changes again.

I'm in central CA. In winter the thermostat is set at 68. In summer it is about 74. I leave it on all the time, even when we're gone, because I want the kitties to be comfortable.

Strange question again....
Stranger still, I'll answer...because I'm sitting here FREEZING right now!!!!!
I'm in Ontario, Canada (about 15 mins. from Buffalo, N.Y.). I think when I went to turn the heat ON (!), it said 15C(59F). I set it for 20C(68F)!!
There's most always someone home here, but when ever the place is going to be 'empty' for any real amount of time, it gets shut off completely.
Where are you? Do you get/have snow? None here -yet! But, damn, the sky is pretty black...!
