No, if you put a newly cut key in the ignition that has not been programed you will set what nissan calls a "nats" code (nissan anti theft system) meaning it could possibly lock up your car and not allow it to start using any key. To program new keys on an '05 altima you need the Nissan scan tool and their "nats" card and a code for your cars BCM (body control module).
So to answer your question, you can cut it yourself and use it on the doors, but you need to take it to the dealer to have it programed so you can use it in the ignition to start the car.

You have to take the key to a local dealership that has Nissan's. They will give you a quote on how much it will cost. Usually these are pricey, but in some incidents they are not. I work at a salvage yard and many of the older vehicles are STILL expensive. The fob itself I KNOW has to be programmed unless its a system you have had installed yourself. Good Luck and post details if you need anymore assistance!!

In most models of OBD-II (1996 and newer) systems if you have two original keys then you can program a keyblank after the blank is cut.
Typically: Stick one key in ignition turn key on, turn off
Stick second key in turn on and off
Stick new key in and turn on. It should program.
Check owners manual.
Good luck
