What is the most unusual breed that an owner has brought to you?
I mean, (not a real breed) a made up or name for a breed by the breeder or pet store.
I met someone yesterday that told me her dog was a 'teacut cavalier pomeranian'
When she told me this, I knew that she had been scammed.
I'm curious about other 'breeds'
Also, when someone tells you this do you inform them?
What do you say or do? (as a groomer or other animal worker)
Just wondering how others handle this situation.
When I worked at one of the vets here (been a few years ago)
We were informed by the vet, that as his staff we were to put down on the chart exactly what the owner called the breed.
He said if it looked like a rottweiler and the owner said it was a chihuahua....then that MADE IT a chihuahua.

Thought I should add:
The 'teacup cavalier pomeranian'
was not EVEN a mix between the two.
This was supposedly a new 'breed'...
The cavalier part was just thrown into
the name to make it sound unique I guess.
Along with the teacup part. Because it did not look like MOST pomeranians.
It looked just like a longhaired chihuahua,
and I'm almost convinced that that was
actually what it was, the seller just gave it a
new name.

An American Eskimo that really a Pomeranian mix. The woman that bought it paid big bucks for a dog that didn't even have a touch of the breed in it and was a mix.
We've also had "teacup" Beagles.
If someone has a Labradoodle for instance we just simply put down Lab/Poodle mix.
Had a client come in with 2 new puppies a while ago..They were American Cocker Spaniels. She paid a lot of money for them and was told they were a "rare" color... I told the woman very politely that they were not a rare color and if she attended some dog shows she would see a lot of them. I also advised her ot get a good book on Cockers and to contact the parent club as well as go to the AKC site ot see the standard and the colors.

I believe you should put down what the animal most resembles. If you ever had to (done alot) breed search and you put in the computer that the dog was a chihuahua and it clearly didn't look like one, but looked like the Rottweiler then you won't find it. I explain to the owners that it's best to put in Rotti instead of Chih due to if the animal gets lost, you can more easily identify the pet. And when the owners beings in a Labradoodle, Snoodle, Pekapoo, Puggel, or what ever they will come up with tomorrow. If the owner seems they want to know the truth we tell them, if they get defensive we won't argue. But simply says for your pets best interest in mind, this is the breed we choose for reason above.

Being set up at Petco every week with the rescue, I've seen some odd dogs come through. One day a lady came in with a beagle/bulldog mix. I don't think it was marketed as a new breed or anything like that. She didn't specifically say she'd gone out and purchased it. But it was an odd looking little dog to be sure!

haha...we had an older lady come in once to get the first shots for her "teacup chihuahua" the dog didn't look one bit like a chihuahua...looked more like a terrier cross. One of the receptionist ended up telling the old lady that what she got was a terrier cross.
6 months after This old lady brought her dog in for a neuter. The dog was about 4lbs and was definetly a beagle terrier cross.
I felt bad for this old lady..but she still loved her "teacup chuhuahua" lol

hmmm well cant think of a weird "breed" when I was grooming.. alot of cockapoos.. this was before the big designer dog fad tho.
One person did bring in this tiny toy poodle named Harley... he had on a spiked leather Harley Davidson collar.. we found that amusing.
Bob, that "Chinese Crested" could have also been a powdpuff Crested.. they have a full coat of hair. I have seen a few with a curly/kinky coat. Thats not an acceptable coat texture, but it does happen.

sounds such as you have already got particularly some adventure. you're probable merely frightened to initiate your new activity. in case you're grooming at a vet or puppy shop i'm particular they have already got each and every of the kit you desire. If no longer...claw clippers, diverse forms of shampoos....for fleas ,delicate epidermis, oily coats, mange etc.... clippers for poodle-do's,and raveled fur. probable some wonderful bows for prissy dogs . Gloves, flea comb, ear wax remover,...a lot of stuff... desire this helped :)

Not an unusual "made up" breed...but many people claim to have a pure bred when clearly it's mixed. One that comes to mind is a lab that they say is a pure bred lab, but he looks like he could have some shephard in him.

ok I know what you are saying and this isnt the answer - but we did have a Rottie cross with a Shih Tzu - it was dang funny looking dog...
I have had A LOT of people refer to their cats color as a breed...
eg. "what breed is your cat?" " its a calico" (which in fact is a color NOT a breed)
and so forth... some people refer to ALL long haired cats as being "Persians" or "part Persians" this is REALLY annoying - I often see ads for "persians" or "part persians" and its simply long haired cats...
and people who have color point cats - often refer to them as "siamese"..

I was at my vet's office and this guy brought in a bulldog. Quite obviously a bulldog. He kept calling it a boxer. I think it is ridiculous when someone owns a dog and doesn't know what breed it is.

We had a woman with a "mini st. bernard"...essentially a cocker/ eng. spaniel/ pekignese mix. She paid $1000 for a 'St. Bernard' that has no actual St. blood in it....laughable.
