I was wondering.... i've heard that st johns wort can effect the pill, but then antibiotics are supposed to and i've been on those for the last three years not using anything else and it's still never failed. What are the chances of st johns wort being the same?

Apparently it can affect the pill - you may have been lucky not to have become pregnant.

It depends on two factors; Which pill and the amount of St. John's Wort. In typical doses, St. John's Wort has not been proven to effect the activity of contraception. On another note, if you take antibiotics, you should assume that the pill is inneffective. This may not be the case, but there is really only one way to find out, if you know what I'm sayin'.

St John's Wort has quite a few side effects and cause complications with other medication including the contraceptive pill. It does actually work as a mild anti-depressant but the list of side effects and precautions is longer than most conventional drugs.

St Johns Wort is herbal and I have never heard of it affecting the contraceptive pill, antibiotics are a different matter, I fell for my daughter when I had antibiotics and was on the pill!!

St John's Wort can increase blood pressure as can the pill and so you increase the chances of problems in that area. That is what I would be worried about. Why take all of these extra supplements when usually there is no need?

even though it is an herbal remedy, and "natural", it still contains many compounds which can interact with many other medications and supplements. this industry is not regulated, and there are no standards as to the amount of the herb found in various tablets. all the various compounds contained in an herbal formula aren't listed on the package. they may still be unknown. my advice: chuck the st. john's wort. it can be quite toxic.
