Young children---I would avoid very large and toy breeds.
Puppies can be a hand full with small children. They feed off the excitement level of the kids.
An adult dog would probably be best for you. (1-4 years old)
Adoption will allow you to interact with the dog as a family BEFORE you take the dog home. Most shelters have an area where you can "test drive" the animals.
You should spend at least 30 minutes on 2 separate days before you decide. (an hour would be better) Ask to feed the animal from a dish with your children present. Food aggression is one of the biggest problems we encounter.
It's not the type/breed of dog, it's the temperment and mental condition. The welfare of your children MUST be your primary concern.
Please try out your local Humane Society. A mixed breed is often more healthy due to hybred vigor. Under the skin and pretty exterior, it's a dog, that wants nothing more than to please you and be cared for by you. Unconditional love.
A medium sized older pet would seem to fit your circumstances. Good Luck.

I love pretty much all dogs. I have two currently, a Boxer/Lab mix and a Pomeranian/Cocker Spaniel mix. The Pom/Spaniel mix was a gift from my parents for Christmas 2 years ago and the boxer/lab my fiancee and I adopted from a local shelter. There is no better feeling than giving an orphan puppy a good home. Check into local shelters in your area, I promise that you will not only feel good about what you've done but you will come out of it with a loving dog in need of love, affection and a good home. They also only ask that a donation be made to the shelter for the dog.
There was no question for us when we got our boxer/lab mix, Miley, we drove over 2 hours to the shelter after I saw her smiling face on their website. When they brought her out to meet us she was so full of life and such a great, but funny dog. She was a little skittish though. A family found her and her sister on a highway in a garbage bag. Now she loves spending long afternoons at the beach with her little brother and sleeps in the bathtub. LOL
Good luck and I hope you find the perfect puppy for you.

My favorite type of dog is the Irish Wolfhound.. they are not good for a first time owner however.. (and need very specific care and environment)..
But.. I honestly believe ANY breed if raised from a puppy around kids will be good with them.. Some of the larger breeds can get excited and knock the kids down by accident, but.. that can happen with any size dog.
I would suggest starting with a Lab.. maybe a beagle.. (although they can be difficult..especially as a puppy.. scent hounds are all rather difficult) I grew up with schnauzers.. they were always great ..
It really depends on you.

I ran a kennel in Houston for several years, and your best bet is to go to a shelter and see what you are attracted to. Most of the terriers make good pets, but some are very hyper. Nearly all your herding breeds make good pets but usually come in the larger sizes. Toys are good to, but some are to delicate for small children. Hounds and sporting breeds can make great pets but they need a lot of exercise and they can be tunnel visioned, especially your scent and sight hounds. My personal favorite for kids are Boston Terriers. Border Collies are listed as the most intelligent dog around. One thing I know is when you have taken on a dog you have adopted another kid, so make sure you can live with it, because it is a long term commitment! So take your time and you will find a friend that will love forever!!!!!

my favorite dogs are bernese mountain dogs. they are DEFINATELY family-oriented and you can definately trust them with small children and with anything. Their family means everything to them and they are willing to do anything for them. They are so loyal and sweet. And from my experience with several dogs from this breed, including my own, they all have a magical bond with children and absolutely adore and love them.
another breed that I have come to adore are korean jindos. They have only come to have a "bad" reputation because people dont train them. But I have trained my jindo, and he is definately ten times a better dog than any other dog could ever be. This breed easily recognizes small children and their strengths&weaknesses and not only will they be their playmate, but they will also be their forever gaurdian. My jindo is extremely gentle with small children and always looks out and protects them, even if they arent a part of his "pack." Family is everything to them and they will die trying to protect a family member--I know from expereience.BUT: this breed NEEDS training in an experienced hand.
i mean..i grew up with bernese mountain dogs, korean jindos, and boxers---and they were all fine dogs and perfect familiy dogs, even when my sister and i were babies and toddlers. But all dogs are good for families and small children, its just the amount of training and treatment and love that they receive that affects how they will be.
But if you want to have a very easy dog to train, etc. then I would recommend a golden retriever or labrador retriever--they are sweeties!
good luck on your dog search!

Any dogs with a impressive mind-set! I used to have GSDs, and regarded myself a 'massive dogs' human being - I now have Lancashire Heelers (in difficulty-free words 10-12" at shoulder) and characteristic had to admit that personality and mind-set isn't on the concern of length - those little adult men are in basic terms the employer.

the best breed of dog that i have ever wanted and i have now got is a german shepherd she is 2 in december and i have had her since she was 12 week old,she gets on great with both my children, labradors are also good as well as staffordshire bull terriers, but if you have never had a dog before than i would say get a cross breed as they are just as good as a pedigree,
