Honestly, the book of Job answers the question well, but there are other things.

Are all things under God's control? Yes!
Too many people want a reason to blame God, so they turn their back on Him for their misfortunes, that's just being childish.

There are five reasons why bad things happen to God's people:
Natural Consequences of Sin - sin has consequences, we all know it.
Testing - Sometimes God wants to see what you will do when you're in trouble.
Chastening - If you're still in sin, God can make you miserable until you correct your life.
The Glory of God - Sometimes He looks better by taking you down and then bringing you up higher than you were. (look at the end of the book of Job)
The Result of Foolishness - when we don't do things wisely or in a responsible way, bad things happen.

I've had this happen to me. When it did, I described it "as if there was an evil force working against me".
The point I'm making is that I didn't think there WAS an evil force, rather, I thought events were happening AS IF there were an evil force. Theres a significant difference there.
I knew in reality it was just an unfortunate series of events.

If a series of events befell me I'd wonder what I was doing wrong.

Perhaps I should stop driving 90 miles an hour, going into dark alleys at 1 a.m., and stop telling everyone to "blank" off.

If I was living my life normally I would still see if it was me first, and then shrug it off to life being life (i.e. difficult at times and a learning experience).

Guess what?

I can answer this with using the bible.

I believe in karma but disasters are sometimes unavoidable and most always there is no external forces at work.

A series of disasters did happen to me yesterday. It was caused by some crazy woman in an SUV when she flew down the street and hit my car, making it undrivable.

A little of both. Although, the external force may not be directed at me personally.

It would depend on the situation. If I knew I was out of touch with my walk with God, I would know for sure what was happening. Sometimes bad things happen, that's just the way it is, but somethings God will get our attention. I never am confused when it is God's doing, he is always very clear on that.

It's just the general perversity and unfairness of the universe.;) Seriously though, many disasters can be traced back to bad decisions on our parts.

It is random. Mother Nature carries on however she wants, and has since the beginning of time, regardless of any person, group, religion, deity etc. To think that any one or any thing has any control is pure arrogance.
