Well although the size of the drive is one factor to consider, the other factors may be more important of a factor.
40GB DOES NOT have backward compatibility for PS2 games, so if you're looking to play PS2 games on this machine, you have to eliminate this choice.
40GB has 2 USB ports, and no card reader.
60GB has full backward compatibility with hardware engine used in the PS2, so full backward compatibility.
80GB uses software emulation for it's backward compatiblity.

Since you mentioned that you and your son are not hardcore gamers, then I'd say the ideal system for you is going to be the 80GB, everything else other than the backward compatibility is the same between the 60GB and 80GB versions, including the price, and with the 80GB you get a game.

get either the 40 gig or 60 gig because 80 really isnt worth it. Games off playstation network dont take up much space. Be honest now, no one is really going to use their ps3 as their media centre are they, its just too out of your way. Any way 40 or 60 is the best ratio of value for money and use.

I believe the smallest, cheapest model does not allow backwards compatibility, which means if you have PS2 games you want to play on it, you cannot play them. If you don't have any PS2 games, then that might be the model you want. If you're not huge gamers, but you would like to use it for PS2 games as well, perhaps the 60GB model is your best bet.

if your basing it on price, the 40 GB...

BUT, you can get double the space for just 100 dollars more...

I would get the 80GB, that's what I'm getting tomorrow.
