That depends on what you mean by a nervous breakdown. Most mental illness has certain limited symptoms. Personality disorders often have a wider range. Bad behavior is unlimited.

By self limiting, I am assuming you are referring to whether a person can just turn it off themselves, and the answer is no.
A nervous breakdown is usually caused by a large amount of stress causing the person to lose control of his/her nerves and emotions, it will probably take some meds to help, I suggest that this person see a doctor right away.

It depends on the individual. Everyone who suffers from a nervous breakdown will find the experience different and cope with it in different ways. There is no straight answer to this question.

perhaps, but all mental illness can be either recovered from , or lived with. compare it to physical illness. if you break your leg, perhaps it heals as good as new, or perhaps its never the same again. but because you may not be able to run fast any more, you may become inspired to explore other areas of life which might otherwise have passed you by.
