The problem you have in right in your question. You said "estimates" then threw out a ridiculous number range from 5 to 100 million. Thats really stretching things quiet a bit. Now, go apply that "estimate" logic to the geologic column and the age of the earth. See just how easy it is to jump from reality (known evidence) to ridiculous. When we "estimate" something based on another's "assumptions", that could only be because of someone else's "supposition", we can jump past outer space in a hurry.
Go back to what you "know for sure", then only go as far as reality will allow. Then you'll find yourself very close to that trunk (tree of life), instead of way out on some imaginary limb.

If you think that will stump Christians, you are the idiot, not us. We believe that God has created the over 6 billion diverse people that exist on the earth right now and all of the ones that came before us. So, do you really think that we will believe that it was too difficult for Him to create 5-100 million different species? He created many more stars than that too. So, I explain the earth's biodiversity in that God created each species for its own unique purpose. (And, if evolution were true, then I would find 5-100 million to be a rather small number considering the greater statisctical possibilities of chance)

evolution is the least able to explain biodiversity. natural selection teaches the STRONG survive. I see many things just in my scope of life, that have absolutely no reason to still be here, if survival depends on strength. The first ice age should have finished off man, what 10000 years? at least nothing but snow ice, freezing temp? sure a few animals could have made it, but Man? that just doesn't make sense. consider a Calla Lilly, or a butterfly what if 'fittest' about that. Nothing. I understand the 'theory' about the asteroid killing the large creatures, and leaving nothing but the small mammals, so why did the med. mammals not finish off the small ones? There really are far two many holes in 'toe' for any thinking person to believe in it.

For some reason every time someone says 'God created them', I picture this fat old man sitting at a table clipping together lego-type stuff into an insect shape...

You can't.

Evolution is fact anyhow, it can be seen first hand in our own genes. I don't know why people continue to argue with such a perfect answer to a difficult question.
