Because, from what I can see, most believers seem to think that everyone's interpretation -- excepting their own, of course -- is completely off-base.

Please remember this the next time you are set to call an atheist "arrogant".

All people who believe in the Bible interpret it differently.

Even those of the same faith.

Reading anything is open to interpretation.....it's human to do that....and we're all human no matter what "some" Christians believe.

Hmmm. I never called any atheist arrogant, but I'll answer anyway.

I feel everybody's interpretation of the Bible -- even mine -- is at least a little off.

The Bible contains God's truth. God's truth is way way WAY too big for any kind of language to encompass it, and it's way too big for any human mind to get it all in.

So I'm constantly re-evaluating, reassessing, revising what I know about the Bible. As a Roman Catholic, I believe that the Church has the fullness of the truth, but also that any religion/denomination that teaches love of God, self, and others is going to have at least some portion of God's truth.

I know many Christians who share this view, and the view that as soon as you start to believe that your interpretation of the Bible (or your church's interpretation of the Bible) is inerrant and complete, that is idolatry, and leads to some pretty warped thinking, as evidenced by fundamentalists.

The Torah is about the infinite, and so any interpretation we have must in some way be wrong. It is likely also in some way right if it is done with integrity.

In Judaism, we note that at Mt. Sinai, the Torah was given to "you" in the sinugular. We believe each person was given a unique Torah based on their ability to understand and their own unique experiences.

Therefore, it is really improper to say someone else's interpretation that is done with the idea of coming closer to G-d is incorrect.

For this reason, I never select a best answer to questions. (But pretend I didn't say that and select this one :P )

We can go wrong in interpreting the Bible by ourselves as God never expects us to interpret the Bible by ourselves and He has given us the Holy Spirit as our Teacher to reveal to us especially the deep things of God (1 Corinthians 2:10). When we have the revelation of the Holy Spirit of God's word we will not be in error and have the faith to bring the word to pass (Romans 10:17). It is not by our own might nor our own power but by the Spirit that we can to come to true knowledge of the Bible. When we have the Holy Spirit's interpretation we are right on!

Bible should not interpret by anyone.

2Peter 1:19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; where unto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:

2Peter 1:20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.

2Peter 1:21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

What we must do, is this:

Isaiah 34:16 Seek ye out of the book of the LORD, and read: no one of these shall fail, none shall want her mate: for my mouth it hath commanded, and his spirit it hath gathered them.

The Bible will interpret itself.

There are several issues in the OT that I am still trying very hard to understand, so I can't say that I agree with you. However, I believe I understand the central doctrines taught by the Bible.

But thanks for reminding me I'm not perfect.

Arrogant atheist.

Right. And, personally, I think any interpretation of the bible that sees it as more than a book of mythology is wrong.

The NIV is the best there is.
The NWT (The Jehovahs Witness bible) is flawed & man-altered.

What we have in our hands today is a direct result of the sovereign Lord........
