Good question. I filled out hundreds of death certificates when I was in medical practice (cancer specialty). For the "cause of death" I often wanted to just say "the heart stopped" rather than "acute myelogenous leukemia - and - septicemia (overwhelming infection) - and so on. There were usually a multitude of factors that finally led to the heart stopping.
But more specifically for you - when breathing stops, the heart will cease to function due to lack of oxygen and build up of carbon dioxide. The heart muscle is basically a mindless engine that runs on fuel and oxygen. It has it's own electrical pacemaker.
Note for some of the answerers above - the brain does not tell the heart to beat. The brain does tell the lungs to breathe.

When the person's body dies it is because the soul has abandoned the body and thus the brain and everything shut down. The heart may not be the cause of the death and may be used to another soul live in it in another healthier and alive body.

In this case the heart stopping is due to the rest of the body shutting down first. Just before death the body is flooded with lots of chemical signals to shut down.

It's a case of failure of multiple organs that means related organs stop working one after the other, finally the heart.

The COD(Cause of Death) consists of what was the problem, not what happened in the end.Cardiac related problems are usually expected ahead of time therefore it's considered cardiac arrest when you have a history of problems related to it.
