You are suppose to lean you upper body forward more and bend your knees a little more when coming down. Back tightening while running can also happen when you are overweight. I was overweight couple years ago and when i ran on concrete floor my back tightens up alot, so i ran on treadmill instead and it was fine.
So yeah, if you are not overweight then your running posture must be the reason.

Your back definitely should not hurt while running.I agree with all of Lestermount's points and want to add 2 things.
#1) Try running slowly to start on level cushioned surfaces like a groomed athletic grass field or a spongy track.
#2) If your back still hurts, then medical problems such as stress fracture or spondylolithesis could be the problem. Muscular problems usually are felt after the workout. You didn't mention any radiating pain so disk hernations would be unlikely. A doctor experienced with sports and back problems would be helpful.

snvffy is correct in that you need to do abdominal exercises to help your back. Most people that experience back pain do so because of weak stomach muscles.
Try to do some easy stretching at least twice a day along with your ab work out.
Do not lean forward, when you run stand up straight and tall.
Relax, let your shoulders sag down and swing your arms front to back and not across your body.
Depending on how fast you are running you may have a slight forward lean of up to 10 degrees, but you do not feel like you are leaning forward, if you lean forward you will create many other problems.

There are way too many unknown factors here - are you a new runner - then yes do the ab and back exercises.
If you have been running for a long time - see your local doctor and/or PT if the pain persists.

hey, they are right to some extent about back muscles and abs, but also, your running shoes could have something to do with it. depending on the condition they are in, or maybe you have foot problems which would throw everything off.
try stretching out your back before, just some easy stretchs.
also, make sure you are hydrated, the cramping up could be coming from forms of dehydration.

to be honest i am not sure what is wrong but my one suggestion would be make shure you spend extra time warming up and streching you lower back before running!
