In our region, Demerol and Versed are common drugs for procedures such as colonoscopies. Since my family history is positive for colon cancer, I have undergone the procedure several times. In my personal experience my memory of events prior to the sedation remains intact, but is fuzzy for an hour or two afterward.

This is a well-known fact, and has to be taken into account by the doctor performing the procedure, as the patient will probably not remember any oral post-procedure instructions. And the patient should definitely not drive home alone.

Midazolam (Versed) is a drug commonly used for sedation, and is used because it is an amnestic. It's not common, but it can cause retrograde memory loss.

Here's an article about a severe case:

depends on the drugs used.

Combinations of a benzodiazepine with a strong narcotic cause a twilight sleep, off the top of my head I think Fentenyl is mixed with it for same day surgery. It is probalby not perfect.
