I broke my casserole dish the other day and now I want to cook shepherds pie.
Would I be ok to cook it in a large but not too deep roasting tray?
I know I should just buy a new dish but Im a bit skint at the mo!

Thanks for all your advice guys, I have now gone out and invested in a new dish- £3.50 from Tesco's, Bargain!
My baking tray is a bit too shallow.
Can't wait to dig into my Shepherds Pie!

I only ever make it in a roasting tray.

it needs to be a deep dish or pan because of the liquid. I recently broke my baking dish as i was taking it out to make Shepard's pie. I tossed it all in a big pot and did it on the stove top, mashing it all together.

**Aslong as the meat and gravy part is in the dish you will probably be ok with a shallower one

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by a baking tray. If you mean what I'd call a baking sheet or a cookiee sheet, then no I wouldn't even attempt it. The sheet's going to be far too shallow for a shepherd's pie.

However, if you me what I'd call a lasagna pan, absolutely.

What works well is to mince an onion to every three or four spuds. Mash it all up and place it in your dish. Dab a drop of butter or marg on top and grill until brown.
Cook the rest as mince and put a slice of the 'Rosti' - that's what its called - on top.

no, i suggest using a deep filled baking dish because of the gravy,if you havent got one of those a bacofoil dish then you can freeze it

Yeh, whateevr you cook it in will be fine!
Although, I've got a feeling the Shephard's Pie won't be deep enough.
It's still okay.

well, I would not ..................... BUT

Alternative, why don't you cook mince in pan on hob and do mash seperate, and then brown mash under grill in a dish of some kind with a sprinkle of cheese of course, i always do mine like this as the mash is nicer some how. Like it seperate on my plate, fuss pot aren't I ????
