It depends on what time of the day they coming, how many people, they have children or elder ones with them and also what are the restricted foods for them. Also it is needed to consider how long they are staying and how much you have time for them, in addition are you the only one in the house will be making the food or you have extra help.
usually if we have time we should try to make easy and quick items otherwise order something that everyboday likes.
quick and easy items - you can use ready to make packets for khaman, dhokla. Or try making any of these- upma, bataka-paua, puda, stuffed cabbage or potato paratha, different kinds of pakora, pav-vada, papadi lot, rava utthapam, rava dhokla. or just order pizza that all will like.
Try to make something easy so you yourself won't be in kitchen all the time and you don't have time to sit with them to talk. If nothing just offer cold or hot drinks, ice-cream and dry snacks.
if the guest is new in your area, ask if they are interested in eating something from outside which is famous in your area.
Don't forget to offer "mukhvas" at the end.

Potato Chips
INGREDIENTS
* 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
* 1 potato, sliced paper thin (peel optional)
* 1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste
DIRECTIONS
1. Pour the vegetable oil into a plastic bag (a produce bag works well). Add the potato slices, and shake to coat.
2. Coat a large dinner plate lightly with oil or cooking spray. Arrange potato slices in a single layer on the dish.
3. Cook in the microwave for 3 to 5 minutes, or until lightly browned (if not browned, they will not become crisp). Times will vary depending on the power of your microwave. Remove chips from plate, and toss with salt (or other seasonings). Let cool. Repeat process with the remaining potato slices. You will not need to keep oiling the plate.
Make your own potato chips using your microwave. A tasty and easy alternative to store-bought potato chips (not to mention economical)! A mandoline would make slicing the potato into paper thin slices a breeze.

Why try preparing something special.
If it's lunch / dinner time, you can serve them whatever meals you have prepared. At the most you can add salads, curd, pickles, papads etc. If you feel like serving sweet dish, you can buy shrikhand, gulabjamuns from the nearby stores.
If it's tea time etc then you can serve biscuits, namkeens etc.
If the guests are really very special, then only you need to prepare something. You can try batatawada ( potatoes), finger chips, pakoras or some such things. You can add stuffed parothas easily to the meals, too.

You could make stuffed parothas..It is just like rottis but you just mash potatoes with salt, chili powder, coriander and place it inside the rotti and roll them with a pin and then toast them..you get stuffed parthoas.you could always add available vegetables at home into the potatoes mash
