How can we even consider issuing drivers license to individuals who are not legal residents? It is hard a citizen to get an ID card in the US, but we are going to make it easy for illegal individuals to receive a previlidge we can't offer freely to the American citizens? They state it is for identifications, but what documents will they have/need to present to say who they are? When there is an accident how will that be resolved, they are not legal residents, so they won't/shouldn't be working. America at this point can not afford to take on anything or anyone extra, they can't take care of their own. America has so many legal citizens that can't purchase homes, can't feed their families, are living from check to check and still borrowing some to sustain themselves, and we are entertaining the notion to allow others to come in illegally and take the little from its citizens? Freedom for all, but at what cost?

"It is hard a citizen to get an ID card in the US" - WTF does that mean? It doesn't even make sense.

Now if you would actually stop confusing your diarrhea of the mouth with thinking, and actually start to contemplate about things a little bit, you wouldn't come up with such retarded questions.

Who says the driver licenses would be free for immigrants and not for citizens? I don't think that's even an issue. You act as if the immigrants are just gonna show up somewhere and pick up a license without having to do anything about it. I'm sure they're gonna have to stand in the same crummy DMV lines as everyone else.

You also ask about what would happen in an accident. Think about it; a person without a license cannot get auto insurance, so who would your rather have run you over? An immigrant with a license and auto insurance, or one without either?

Read this article. Mexico does not allow illegals to get a license, why do they think we should? Among other things.
By Chris Hawley, USA TODAY
MEXICO CITY — The question of whether to give driver's licenses to illegal immigrants has ignited a national debate in the United States.
Yet in Mexico, the biggest source of immigrants to the USA, there's no debate: If you're not in the country legally, you can't get a driver's license.

All of Mexico's 31 states, along with the federal district of Mexico City, require foreigners to present a valid visa if they want a driver's license, according to a survey of states by USA TODAY.

"When it comes to foreigners, we're a little more strict here," said Alejandro Ruíz, director of education at the Mexican Automobile Association.

The issue took the national spotlight after presidential hopeful Hillary Rodham Clinton said a move by the New York governor to give licenses to illegal immigrants "makes a lot of sense" during a debate.

Proponents said the plan would have made the roads safer by ensuring that drivers are trained and insured, but the ensuing public outcry forced Gov. Eliot Spitzer to abandon the effort this week. U.S. Rep. Pete King, R-N.Y., filed a bill Wednesday that would bar states from any future attempts
Hillaary has since said she will vote against it.

Dog, No they won't, and why the hell should I have to press "1" for English, I thought that was the language of the American people? IF they were LEGAL, they can get an ID card at a Drivers' License Office in almost all states (I don't know of any where they can't, but just in case). What happened to the definition of the term "Illegal"? Not legal, against the law (when did the definition change?). If someone does something illegal, against the law, they are punished, not rewarded! Why not make everything legal and that way we can say that there is no crime in America? This is really a slap in the face, to the honest, Legal, law abiding, foreign nationals who LEGALLY enter the U.S. looking for a better life. BTW guess who's taxes are supporting these illegals, and yet needy, deserving Americans cannot get support. It's really pathetic, and a crime against honest, hard-working Americans & legal immigrants.

it is an incredibly bad idea. They are used as entry way to the voting processes, and social welfare programs. In addition to a legal drivers license, they ARE buying the illegal identifications that enable yet more social welfare access, and the end of the story is simple: the Mexican Nationals are finally caught and removed from the country without going to jail for a couple of years. They have nothing to lose. It would also seem they are being facilitated by our own government.

No they should not. If we give them ID cards than we make it easier for them to break our laws. It's important to note that not all illegal aliens come here from Mexico Many may come from Middle Eastern countries and maybe terrorists, drug dealers or other criminals. The security of our nation demands that we put an end to illegal immigration while still encouraging legal immigration and controlling our borders to maintain our safety. Any move that makes it "easier" for illegals makes it more dangerous for legal citizens and visitors.

Well, if it's gonna happen, we need to be realistic: We should make them take the driver's test in a 1977 Ford pickup with six people in the cab(at least 1 will be a small child without a DOT-approved safety restraint). There also should be no less than 3 unsecured extension ladders and 36 empty Tecate cans in the bed of the truck.

Ill tell you whats funny. New york's illegals will not get drivers licenses. They are not going to be deported either. What is New York left with? The status quo. I guess its better to have them drive around unlicensed and uninsured.

For some reason (stupidity? brainwashing?) many Americans don't see this country as their home.
I don't think a reasonable person would treat an intruder as we treat illegal immigrants. No matter how compassionate you are, would you allow an intruder to live in your house without any knowledge of his background? Would you share your property with him, give him access to your assets, etc?
I guess not.

It's odd that even issues that should be resolved with just a little common sense, like this one, seem to escape the idiots that hold office in our government today and propose programs like the one you cited. ( RE: New York Governor Eliot Spitzer, supported by New York Senator Hillary Clinton)
