one of my friends took his plugs off for a month and it didnt do anything (his was a size 0). Hahaha he would grab his pen at school and loop it though his ear :D if you want it a size 0 or greater it doesn't shrink back unless you go to your doctor and have a shot thingy to shrink it. Gauges look pretty sweet though!

I say this from an extraordinary amount of experience...

I had my ears gauged up to size 7/16... which is kinda big. Everyone says size 2 is the point of no return... well, they dont know much, obviously... my ear closed back alllllll the way, and now I'm gauging again...

I'm pretty sure 1/2 and inch is the threshold... dont quote me on that, though. good luck!

if you size they up beyond a certain point, they're unlikely to go back to the original :

If the jewelry is removed from the piercing, the hole will shrink in diameter over the course of weeks and months. The amount a stretched earlobe will shrink if jewelry is removed long-term is dependent on the specific person pierced, and it's impossible to give an exact amount that will apply to everyone. Please note, however, that it's generally accepted that a piercing stretched to 4 gauge or over is not likely to shrink to the point it won't be noticeable. Earlobes which which have been scalpelled or punched will typically not shrink beyond the size they were when the procedure was performed.

Anything bigger than gauge 4 has the risk of not closing up.
