Winzip is a file de/compression & archiving utility. Not long ago it was up to the users to obtain such tools as they were not integrated into the operating system environment as they now are with Windows XP. However, better free tools exist. I recommend www.7zip.org

If you're specifically asking about Winzip I guess it doesn't do any more than the default program in XP....zipping a file. I don't use it.
It reduces the size of the file (other than mp3's). Saves a lot of space.

Winzip compress the file to .zip format.
so you ca reduce the size of the orginal file.
you can download ZipGenius it will de-compress all kinds of compressed formats.

it is just a program to unzip zipped files. (many things you download from the internet will be zip files and sometimes you need a special program to extract the files to your hard drive) windows can unzip files just fine, but winzip is good to have because it can unzip more types of zip files and some people just prefer it.
