ok the wedding ring tradition started waaaaaaaaaaay long ago. it was because the ring is worn on the third finger on the left hand which is supposed to have a main vain running straight to the heart. Also the round shape lasts forever as a marriage is intended too. The marriage certificate was started as in the eyes of god you are now formally linked forever. But to me I think even if you never had the ceremony with vows or the rings you can still be the exact same as a couple who has. That the family and friends watching you say you want to have the rest of your lives with the other is really the most meaningful

|The legal bit is the license or certificate in UK. Im pretty sure I read somwhere that the ring is on the 3rd finger of the left hand as that is directly linked to you heart. The ring symbolises eternal love with no end and no begginning. When I got married, the rings were optional (of course we had them), so thats how I know they have no legal meaning. Justromance and tradition!

The marriage license, and being married by an official (judge, priest etc) and the vows. The ring is just an outward symbol of the marriage, and you do not need any ring at all to get married.

It is ligit when you sign your life away on that piece of paper. The symbolism of a wedding band is to represent eternity because a circle is never ending and they put it on the ring finger because the blood from that finger goes directly to your heart. At least that is what discovery channel told me. But I dont know where the tradition of a engagement ring came from.

in this day and age the rings symoblise the legitimacy of the marriage. the paper is te legal document that makes it official in the eyes of the law. the religious ceremony makes it legit in the eyes of the church. and the connsumantion makes it legit for the couple, the day makes it legit for the family.
legaly though the only thing that does it is the certificate

The marriage license and having a licensed person perform the marriage ceremony makes it legit.

Legally or legitomately it is the registered piece of document that is recognised by the government. Ring or band is only a symbol, nothing legal at all.

A marriage becomes legal when the marriage license is signed by the witnesses and mailed to the county clerk. When the clerk records it, it becomes legal.
