I have just purchased a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 regular cab, long bed pickup. It has a 5.2L and automatic, and also a factory tow package.
It has a 3.55:1 rear, trans cooler, bigger radiator, and oil cooler.
What is the maximum towing capacity for this truck? The manual states 7,800lbs. but the GCWR isn't high enough to support that claim.
I have a 31ft. travel trailer that I need to tow with it, the trailer weighs 6,300lbs fully loaded, and is a bumper pull.
The truck also has a Class IV hitch rated at 10,000lbs, and the truck already has an electric brake controller.
Thanks

The 7,800 lbs GCWR is for the 3.9 liter V-6. The V-8 is rated at 12,500 lbs.
Go to http://dodgeram.info/2001/towing-charts.html. Per their charts the max towing capacity for your truck is 7,950 lbs (2WD) or 7,600 lbs (4WD) with minimum payload. If your truck is loaded to it's max GVWR of 6400 lbs, the towing capacity drops to 6100 lbs (12,500 - 6400 = 6100).
Also, make sure you turn off your overdrive to save your transmission. Gas mileage will suck but it's better than $2500 for a new tranny.

You don't want to tow 10,000 pounds with a 1/2 ton truck. You really need to step up to a 3/4 ton to tow that 5th wheel. There are many factors to towing, transmission cooling, engine cooling, suspension capability, etc. The engine can handle it, just not all the components on the truck.

you cant do a bumper pull with that much weight behind it ,the bumper will not take it,if you have a class 3 hitch on it,that will support the weight the truck will pull it ,that's not the problem,i got site for the capacities for that truck but it doesn't rate it right, those bumpers would not support what they say they will, you can do this from a class 3 receiver though with no problems, good luck ,here's the sire for the capacity's,but the owners manual also tells this,,,http://dodgeram.info/2001/towing-charts.html
