To become a climatologist you have to have a degree and to get onto a climatology degree course you need a sound college education with good grades. Mathematics will almost certainly be a prerequisite. I don't know how the education system in the US works but here in the UK you would need at least three advanced (A) level qualifications with grade A or B passes before being considered.

There are pure or applied climatology degree courses for which subjects such as physics and chemistry would be desireable. There are coupled courses such as climatology and geography or climatology and ocean studies for which suitable subjects such as geography or biology would be desireable.

Some people aren't too keen on mathematics, if you're one of these people I'd suggest considering an alternative subject as the climate degree course is full of maths.

Climatology is a very broad subject and you may wish to choose a specialist area. You could do this by taking a combined course or by obtaining a degree in climatology and then moving into a specialised area.

The only way to avoid college would be to take a correspondence course. This will be a difficult route to take as much of the coursework is of a practical nature. You'll find it so much harder this way as you'll miss out on the practicals, demonstrations and field studies. Whilst there are several universities offering courses in climatology I'm not even sure if it's available as a correspondence course - you'd need to check this out.

Yes, but, why would you want to take the hard way of becoming an officer? You do mean commissioned right? I hate to bust any bubble, but your going at this Officer thing backwards. Go enlisted if you want, then go to college on the GI Bill, then go to the Naval Academy. Or ROTC while in college? Do some more research before making your decision. Best of Luck to you and your future

The same way Al Gore, Leonardo DiCaprio and all of those performers in the Live Earth concert did. Just develop a skill that brings you into the public eye that consumes a disproportionate amount of the earths resources, then announce you've gone "Green" and pontificate on how everyone else should behave once your riches are secured.

Sorry if this sounds negative, but I think a person should get an education before becoming an expert. There are enough quacks in the field already.

You can't- that is a specialized field that requires knowledge and experience that is only available at a college. The only other way is to have craploads of money and hire one to train you one-on-one.

Uh, you probably can't. I would recommend at least looking into a two-year program at a technical college.
