All other considerations aside (CPU speed, CPU on-board cache, hard disk drive speed, hard disk drive on-board cache, video card GPU speed, on-board video RAM, disk defragmentation, etc., etc., etc.) the single best thing that you can do to enhance your computer's performance/speed (aside from using a well-written OS that manages hardware resources as excellently as possible, and turning off the extra GUI glitz) is to install as much RAM as possible.

I'd start with deleting temporary internet files and cookies. If you're using Windows XP, just click on Tools on the menu bar of your web browser, then click on Internet Options. Look on the General tab, in the Browsing history section. Click on the Delete button, and it will give you the option to delete cookies and so on.

After doing this, I'd go ahead and defragment the hard drive. Whenever I end up doing this, I just go into the Search option from the Start button, and search for "defrag" under file names. (Don't use the quotation marks.) Double-click the defrag program, and it should come up and let you get started with it. It takes quite a while, especially if you haven't done it lately, so what I do is wait until I'm finished with my computer for the day, go in and tell it to defragment the hard drive, and let it run all night long. Oh - disable your screensaver first. When my screensaver kicks in, it overrides the defragment program and the thing starts over... kind of like getting stuck in a loop.

Hope this helps.

you can derfrag your hard drive, go start> control panel> delete> delete all option tick box for pop ups and say yes , but if you want to do registry back up you need software like ccleaner, spybot search and destroy or system mechanics 7.
go to http://www.oldapps.com for spybot and cleaner. System mechanics7 will do all but it will cost you. http://www.iolo.com you can download a 30 day trial, then it costs after that.
