Hi all, I have a semi-automatic handgun that I keep in a gunsafe, and I was wondering if there are any downsides to keeping an EMPTY magazine in the gun for longterm storage?

I would keep the magazine and the pistol side by side, but since the gun safe is on the small side, I was considering inserting the magazine into the gun for longterm storage. Are there any adverse effects this might have on springs inside the gun, etc?

None. You are perfectly safe storing your empty magazine empty in your handgun for long term storage in your Gun Safe. In fact the only problems that arise are when FULLY LOADED magazines are stored long term inside some handguns.. The magazine springs lose their "memory" which is defined by the springs ability to extend to it's original configuration. Even this is an extremely rare occurrence..I have magazines in some handguns that have been fully loaded (minus one round each) for many years and never had a problem....

NOTE* Don't forget to put a desiccant pack (Silica Gel) in your gun safe to absorb any moisture...

As long as the magazine is empty you are golden. When I store a pistol with an empty magazine inserted I do wipe the magazine with a light coat of lubricate before inserting, but other than preventing moisture in the safe with a commercial moisture control pack you shouldn't need anything additional.

In my safes I use one of the electric moisture control rods, but in yous a small pack is sufficient I am sure.

I understand the mechanics... and still rotate my magazines. In theory, the springs should not "set" or see a change in tension... but after 30+ years I dont like to leave any action or magazine springs under constant compression

I also recommend storing it with a good coat of grease. If there is any moisture at all in the weapon when you put it into storage then the magazine could become rusted into the magazine well. It doesn't happen all the time and depends on your particular climate (humid climates in particular). Of course when you go to use it after a long period of storage be sure to inspect, clean and lube before use.

Ok I have four thumbs down, yet no one has said anything to refute what I said. Just my two cents. I've seen too many weapons come out of cold storage in a damp climate covered in rust.

absolutely fine to do that its only when they are loaded it becomes a problem keep it in a dry place and it will be fine.
