My car was totaled and the insurance company finally gave me a decent offer that I'm going to accept. Can they change their offer after I accept it? For example, if they offer me $5,000 and I accept, can they, before I receive a check, turn around a week later and say they're only going to give me $4,000?

Nope, once they put the offer in writing and you accept it in writing, they have to stick by it.

Once you sign the paper, they cannot change it, unless they find some evidence of fraud or misleading information in the information you submit that would have led to a different offer. As long as you are straight up in your negotiations, that is highly unlikely.

Did this happen or are you just being paranoid and playing "what if"?

Usually - once you reach an agreement the insurance company honors it.

So quit playing "what if" and just settle the claim. If it actually happens then come back and ask the question.

If you signed the claim form based on a stated amount, they will not be able to change it. That is to protect both parties.

IF YOU HAVE SIGNED THE PAPERWORK FOR THE FULL AND FINAL SETTLEMENT THEN NO THEY CANNOT CHANGE THE OFFER.
