I feel that God gives me the opportunity to earn money, so it should be His in the first place. Not just money, though, time, ability, talents, etc. also. Its not so important as to the dollar amount that you can give but how you give. If you can't give a lot of money then give some of your time and services. It's about having a giving heart and giving God what's rightfully His in the first place.

If people want to, its fine. It is a custom picked up from the Levites. The Levites were a tribe (family) of Israel that served as priests. They held no other job, so they had no other income. The other tribes paid a percentage of their income to help the Levites. At first the early Christians were not 'professional' ministers, they had other jobs and other sources of income and met in private houses and spoke informally. As things emerged though and the state and church mixed tithes became a form of taxes in a way to support the church, which in turn supported the government. As separation of church and state occurred, the ministers were extremely poor in many cases so tithes go to support the minister and/or the church. Since the government does not pay the ministers salary or have people maintain the church for free, tithes are like a necessity to support the minister and the church. Many ministers of smaller congregations have to get a second job because they do not have enough to support their family. Ministers of larger congregations can get rich though, sometimes excessively..... But there are so many poor in the world it seems wrong to condemn someone for being rich. That would be like condemning a well person during a time of plague.

I do it! it was a principle in The Old Testament and it is a principle in the New Testament.
Deuteronomy chap 26
Luke 11:42 (as He talks about what the Pharisees are doing He points out that titheing Should Be done)
II Corinthians 9:6-1
Ephesians 4:28
Hebrews talks about it in 7:1-9
So the basic principles are there. I believe it is part of keeping our convenat with Him and opening a door into our lives more than just faith. Using that same faith and trusting Hom for all of our needs especially finances.
God Bless you and keep you

I now belong to what is probably the only church in America where the pastor says tithing is NOT a requirement!
I give and usually its 10% of my income, mostly because I comfortable with that figure. However, I know that God doesn't have a calulator in His hand and there have been many times when I just couldn't do that much and there's been times when I could give more.
I also have learned that money is the least of God's concerns when it comes to my giving any ways. I'm here on R&S for instance, as a service to God and I see this kind of giving of sorts. God loves to give to me and I love to give back to Him.

Tithing is explained in Malachi. Tithe = 1/10.
Basically it's to contribute 1/10 of your income to the church. Simple concept, but not many churches practice it.

It is an old covenant command, and like all such commandments, is not a part of the New Covenant.
There is no example of Christians being required to tithe.
But false churches and pastors use tithing as a means to feed their own bellies while devouring flocks.
Tithes were assessed on the increase of produce and livestock only, and never wages / income.

Do you want to know how I personally feel about it or what GOD's WORD says about it? Personally I don't have a problem with it. It all goes along with seed time and harvest. What does GOD's word say about it...plenty and yes, we are suppose to tithe. How much? IMO that's really betweeen you and GOD. Originally it was called tithe because in the OT you were required to give 10% now we are not bound to the law, so we can give what we feel is right.

Nichelle tithing is of the law, if u keep the law u have to keep all of the law, there are over 300 laws to keep.
Notice in the Newer Testament Christ said behold the widow with just two coins gave half of what she had to live on, yet the Pharisees gave a tenth of everything.
Christ said they strain at a gnat and sallow a camel.
Because they took money from poor widows.
Unless u were born Hebrew u were never under the law.
If u are Hebrew, read the book of Hebrews to make clear what God through Christ wants for His people Israel.

ALL SCRIPTURE IS BENEFICIAL FOR TEACHING. SEEK AND YOU SHALL FIND.
I, myself, I give 10 percent to the Lord, when I find a worthy cause. I am not a Sunday morning Christian. Although I think the Lord is calling to me to raise my voice and sing praise.
I get really irratated at the service industry (waiters and waitresses) who seem to think I ought to give them more than I give my Lord. (We are constantly told to give them 15%.) I don't think so. I have to go out alone a lot of times and these people ignore me because they think I won't tip them at all. What a mistake. The little college girl that delivered a cheese pizza to my house got a 7 dollar tip! My niece is in college; my daughter used to work for Pizza Hut and I know how bad they treated her. And when I was married, they were all over my old man, thinking they would get a better tip, so they ignored me. But what they don't realize is, mama holds the pursestrings, and if mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy! Papa is gonna to get a big cold bed at home, cause I'm the one he's going home with, not you! That's just the way it is. I don't give a damn who you are! One day, I caught him and a friend talking about going to a strip joint; I promptly reminded my "husband" that "I don't pinch dimes and nickles so you can go stuff dollar bills in a strange womans' g-string." Nuff said-his friend laughed and left!

Tithing is giving 10% to God's kingdom. Its scriptural, and to not do it is robbing God. It goes directly to the church. Its about being in good standing with God, not to impress anybody at your church, etc.
