Hello,
I have a 5 1/2 month old olde english bulldog and I am wondering if there is anyway to induce vomiting without hurting him? I ask only because he has a history of eating things (like full pairs of underwear without chewing them or anything) and then throwing up. Now it's been awhile since this happened because we have puppy proofed our house as much as possible but last night I noticed that his belly was harder then normal and REALLY engorged. He also was whining a little bit at random times but I can't seem to figure out why. Now tonight his belly is twice the size, very big so I am wondering if perhaps he found something and ate it and it is stuck in his belly?
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated greatly!

Thank you for all the answers... if I had an emergency vet service I would have been there already but I live in very rural area and the closest vet clinic is 35 mins away and it doesn't have an after hours service. I am trying to find the next closest one!
Thank you again to everyone who gave helpful answers.
To the person who told me not to play doctor and take him to someone who knew what they were doing - clearly, I don't know what I am doing which is why I am enlisting the help of anyone who has ideas, but thank you anyways for your not so helpful response.

Give him a teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide. my chihuahua ate chocolate once when she was a couple weeks old, and hydrogen peroxide made her vomit it up without hurting her hope this helps =]
btw we called the animal hospital and the vet told us to do this so for all of you who gave me thumbs down, I'd like to see YOUR vet liscence!

hydrogen peroxide is a great way to make a dog vomit if he gobbles down a bag of chocolate chips in 2 seconds flat(don't ask)
But if your pup has an object that will cause intestinal blockage please get him to the vet. He might not require surgery, the vet may just give him something to help him pass the object. But at least with x-rays they can tell you if the object is moving thru the body, or if it's stuck.
If you don't have the money to pay for the vet visit, ask your vet if they have any resources(names of organizations to help pay for emergencies).

If his stomach is hard and enlarged, he most likely has a blockage, and in all seriousness, needs to see a vet IMMEDIATELY. If he does have a blockage, and you don't get it taken care of right away, you may lose him. You really need to puppy proof your house and make sure he cannot get into things. Puppies at this age, will chew on just about anything and you need to be more careful about what you leave laying around. You did not mention, how long he has had this, and the longer you wait, the more dangerous and life threatening it gets for him.

You can induce vomiting in a dog by giving him a tablespoon or 2 of hydrogen peroxide. It takes 10-15 minutes to take effect, and he will vomit violently. Hydrogen peroxide is poisonous, so it's not a good idea to give him more than 2 tablespoons. HOWEVER - since it's been 24 hours since you noticed the initial problem, I don't think vomiting will take care of it. You probably should take him to an emergency pet clinic ASAP before it's too late. It sounds like there is a blockage and he could die.

If your dog's abdomen is visibly distended, as you have explained, this is no longer an issue that should be solved at home. You need to see your veterinarian immediately. A bloated abdomen can be a very serious, even life-threatening problem. It could be due to intestinal twisting, a ruptured intestine, a blockage, a GDV, perineal effusion, or things much more benign. You won't know without going to your vet, and making your dog vomit could make it worse.

Try calling your vet anyways. On my vet's answering machine (in the office) it gives a pager number to reach the vet after hours. This way you can at least consult with a professional on this matter, and they can help you make the best decision on how to proceed. I would think any good vet would come in after hours for an emergency or be able to refer you else where.
Good luck, I hope your pup's alright!

Don't make him vomit at home - take him to the vet. They have drugs there that can make him vomit but more importantly they will examine him and make sure that that is what needs to be done. It could be anything from eating too much to a gastric torsion - don't take the risk. If his belly is big and he seems uncomfortable, take him to the vet. If he's just bloated but seems okay otherwise then monitor and if he gets worse then take him in. Giving him something to irritate the gut enough to make him vomit, may just make things worse.

if swallowed something poisonous, u still have 50% that u might be saved. but if u induce vomiting at the same time, you'll have less than 20%. *just an example, why u shouldn't induce vomiting after you have wallowed something poisonous or have overdosed on medications, etc.*

Please call your vet, they have the number to get in touch with the on call doctor. H or she can give you the name and number to a EV or may tell you to meet him at the office if there is none with in driving range. Iapcac, is one way, however you may cause further harm to him or block off breathing.
Please call, I know you are doing your best to get him help but this is something he needs medical attention for or you may be faced with a dead dog, this is one of the things that can be wrong.
Canine Bloat
What is meant by the term "Canine Bloat"?
This is a term that is synonymous with the more scientific term Gastric Dilatation/Volvulus. It is often called GDV. That means that a dog's stomach twists on its long axis and distends with air to the point where the dog goes into shock and may die.
Dilatation means that the stomach is distended with air, but it is located in the abdomen in its correct place (has not twisted). Volvulus means that the distention is associated with a twisting of the stomach on its longitudinal axis.

Do NOT induce vomiting. if the article is large enough it could choke him to death coming back up. Go to a VET. He probably cannot pass what ever he ate or it has caused a blockage.
Also my son was doing research on English Bull dogs and it seems they have history of having their intestines twist and it CAN kill them.

He may have a blockage this time, If he hasnt thrown it up or pooped it out by now it's because he cant, his belly is getting bigger because it's blocked up. I would take him to the vet instead of trying to induce vomiting, it may cause more damage.
