Because grammar is spelled as such.
People's is spelled as such.
Versus is spelled as such.
Their is spelled as such.

For some people, such as myself, a misspelled word or phrase simply bugs me. I can't get past the errors to answer the question. I'm not sure sometimes, if the person on the other end will understand what I answer if all the words are spelled correctly.

"Check Spelling", a feature offered here at no charge is quite useful.

Other than that, I am obliged to answer anyone's question.

For my part, when I see a simply misspelling, generally I ignore it. Anyone can make a typo. But when I see a question that is just littered with spelling and grammatical mistakes, I feel offended. I feel that if I am going to take the time to try to help an asker solve a problem or learn something, the asker can at least have the common courtesy to communicate effectively. Generally, excessive mistakes just mean laziness. I have no patience for people who are lazy enough to allow themselves to appear ignorant.

Because bad spelling/grammer can make it hard to understand a question.

It should have been: "Why is it that people insist on commenting on people's spelling and grammar verses answering their question?"

Sorry, I couldn't resist. I think that people are just trying to help. Plus, it's fun. :)

I have always wondered that as well.

People on Y! Answers always find the need to criticize those that may use poor grammar or make a spelling error.

I think it is largely unnecessary, but many people on here do it.
