When Serbian nationals attacked and killed the Archduke of Austria-Hungary in Sarajevo, the two alliance systems that had been established in the late 19th - early 20th century in Europe kicked into action. Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, which was defended by Russia, which was part of the Triple Entente with Britain and France. The Entente had formed to counter the Triple Alliance, spearheaded by the newly-united Germany under Bismarck, between Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy.
Russia declared war on Austria-Hungary, which caused Germany to get involved, followed by Britain and France. Only Italy stayed on the sidelines, and eventually switched sides in 1915.

1.Militarism-Countries like Germany were building up their armies at an incredibly fast rate, this caused tension between some countries. 2.Alliances-The assassination of Franz Ferdinand caused Germany to come to the aid of Austria-Hungary. In defense of the Serbians, the Russians came and this became one of the first sparks that began the war. 3.Imperialistic motivations were especially prevalent with Germany who certainly wanted colonies of her own. 4.Nationalism was also very common in Germany, this was also one of the reasons why Franz Ferdinand was killed. The Serbians felt prosecuted by the Austrians.
