Lithium carbonate is the standard drug to treat bipolar disorder and once you're diagnoised with it, you take it the rest of your life. No one knows for sure why lithium works, but it does. But its bad for the liver. Is there ever a case where an individual after many years without a relapse, is declared "cured" and no longer needs to take his medication?

Nope. Everyone is biploar to one degree or another. The whole "disease" is a hoax that makes the drug companies lots of money and ALSO keeps them hooked on the drugs because the drugs are so potent if they go off them too quickly they could actually die.
But the professionals who make money dealing these drugs (the drug dealers) think such a stance is dangerous to the individuals, eventhough they won't admit legal drug dealing is essentially what they do (illegal drug dealers council too, and so do prostitutes).

If there was a cure, it would be all over the news there is no "cure" for Bipolar but you can live a good life with a diagnose of Bipolar. There has been years that I have not taken medication but years that I have...I have been okay this time for eight years and stop taking meds six years ago, But am smart enough to know I will always have bipolar.. I know my symptoms and so does my family and Friend and if I need to go back to an hospital I will or use meds then I will.

I have Bipolar and have been on Lithium and Depacote in the past. My psych. put me on anti-seizure medication 3 years ago and it has worked wonderfully. I even went through a period where I refused to take my medication for 6 months and had very few symptoms. When I asked my doctor why this had happened he said that I had a period of remission.

Examples of the drugs that I am talking about are: Trileptal and Lamictal. I love Lamictal it has been a life saver. I am on a combo of Lamictal and Topamax. The type of bi-polar I have is more depressive and I also have OCD with anxiety so I also take an antidepressant called Cymbalta.

I hope that what I have shared with you has been a help. I believe that if you go to your psychiatrist with this knowledge he may be able to change your medication to where you aren't having to have blood tests and weight gain.

ok i am a pro at bipolar, i am myself, but you have been misinformed about lithium. it is not the leading med. you cant really say there is a leading med because everyone with bipolar is diiferent. i myself go on a different drug cocktail every 6 mons because my situation changes or my body adapts to the meds. i have been on lithium before and vomited actually the first 2 nights i was on it, and it worked for a short period of time, 6 mons or so and then i switched again. bipolar, i am sad to say is a lifelong battle. sometimes you dont notice it and other times it rules your life. the best way to cope with having it is to surround yourselve with people that love and care about you because when it comes down to it, my support system of family has saved my butt more often than meds every have. good luck:) and know that every hard time, every "rock bottom" gives you something to take away from it, the expierence and knowledge and warning signs of what may happen so that with each "rock bottom" you come out more prepared for the next

i wish there was a cure. but i am not sure if pills help either.. i will go through periods of mild depression, mania, remission, and deep depression (as deep as you can get without being dead)... i take the meds and still i have these combo of feelings. my meds change over time so in many ways i feel taking meds is just a crock. i have been all of the feelings above on various combos of drugs. currently i am looking at something called trace minerals that has 1mg of lithium in a dose. google bipolor cures and find something called E.M Power which i think is just a type of multi vit. email me if you learn of anything new and good luck with your search-- dancingpretzels@hotmail.com

If there is, the "drug" companies would not release it. They only want your dependance on their drugs. Pharmaceutical companies don't make cures, they only make drugs, and sometimes even invent illness" like Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS).

No cure, just management with drugs.

the best you can hope for is a long remission, not a cure

Medication is the only answer. It's a disease...you did not do anything to get it.
