Yes hamsters do eat their waste as well as rabbits, guinea pigs and chinchillas all do this.

Lagomorphs / rodents produce two types of droppings, fecal pellets and cecotropes. The latter are produced in a region of the animal digestive tract called the cecum. The cecum contains a natural community of bacteria and fungi that provide essential nutrients and possibly even protect the animal from harmful pathogens.

Animals deprived of their cecotropes will eventually succumb to malnutrition. Cecotropes are not feces. They are nutrient-packed dietary items essential to your companion animals good health.

Mine eats where she poos, she'll stuff it in her pouches with the rest of her food. It's gross, but they do it. My dwarf hamsters don't seem to do that as much.

I don't think it is a sign of retardation. Just gross.

She may just be moving it. Have you seen her actually eat it? If so, I don't why she would be doing this. I have had many hamsters and have never seen them do this.

Hamsters are dumb. My hamster ate his brother for no reason. They lived in a good clean food filled environment. One day he just went crazy!
