It depends on the plane you will be in and how your weight is distributed. First check with the airline to see what aircraft is being flown--- this is usually noted in the "Details" section where the flight times are. You can then cross-reference the airline and the plane type at seatguru.com to see how much space your seat will have. If you're flying on a Boeing (like a 727) you will have a little more space; other planes, particularly the Canadair jets (the CRJ-2 aka CRj-200) are very uncomfortable even for petite passengers.
Seatguru.com will show you which seats to avoid or select (i.e. some seats have no armrest which gives a bit more room).
If you're on a larger plane, especially if it is not a peak travel time, select a widow or aisle seat as far back in the plane as you can go; middle seats fill up last and tend to fill up from the front so you have a better chance of having no one next to you if you're towards the back. This is no guarantee though!
You do have the option of purchasing a second seat but if you do, don't use a reseller such as Priceline. You might arrive at the airport to find that your seats are 7c and 22d which do you no good for gaining space! Booking directly with the airline gives you a much better chance that the two seats will "stay" together. Also some airlines will refund you part or all of the second fare if the flight does not sell out.

A size 24 is different on different people, so it is hard to say. As other people have recommended, an aisle seat or first class may be better, or try to fly during less popular times, so that the plane will be emptier. The airline attendant may try to give you a little more elbow room by not putting someone next to you.
A cheap way to check your comfort would be to ride a city bus. If you can sit in a two-person bench with another person without feeling like you need to hold yourself in, you will be fine on the plane.
As far as the airlines are concerned, if you can fit down the aisle, put down the arm rests, and buckle your seatbelt you should be fine.

It really depends on the airline. Some airlines seats are much more comfortable such as United. They also have more leg room. The best thing to do would be contact the airline and ask them. They can give you a pretty good idea. I really do not think that you will have any problems. If you go with Southwest, I'm not sure how you feel about children, but see if you can sit in a seat beside a child. When I fly them, I sit by a child because they take less room and are pretty good on trips most of the time. Hope this helps :)

I'm a guy so I have no idea what a size 24 means in inches and pounds.
I'm also a 6'2 " 250 lb guy that flies in coach more often than I'd like to
My strategy is to first pick out the airplane -wide bodies- are better then personally check- in early enough to negotiate my favorite seat which is a bulkhead , exit row ,aisle or window seat. Middle seats are for tiny people
On a single aisle aircraft middle seats are B & E

Well I just flew economy and I am a 22. If I had not been sitting next to the window and my husband, I would have been very uncomfortable. No doubt about it, I "hung" over into my hubby's space. A stranger would have been very aggravated. Getting 2 seats together may be cheaper than 1 in first class. That would eliminate the embarrassment and give you plenty of extra room to place those items that you usually have to stuff under your seat, making it a uncomfortable for your legs.

I don't think you would need 2 seat
if you want to be absolute sure then call the airline
you are planning on using and ask
you do not have to give your name to ask
size 24 is not too large just so many waifs
size 2's on covers of mags that make anyone
size 6 and up feel big

I don't think you will have an issue. But your best bet is I think to maybe get a seat in the back and maybe have a window or ilse seat. I think your psyching yourself out over nothing. I assure you they have had allot bigger people on plains before! They will not make you feel uncomfortable. Just relax and have a good time:)
I am a big girl to and I had a window seat I looked out the window the whole trip it really is amazing:)

well when you get on the airplane, they let you sit down to see if you are indeed to large, and if you are then they charge you for 2 seats, so you can use 2 seats, and wont bother the person next to you
but i dont think you would need 2 seats, the people that i have seen this happen to are much larger than you :)
first class is also an option, the seats are almost 3times bigger and comfy

I would think you're okay in an economy class seat. I fly a LOT and I'm not a small person, and although it's not always extremely comfortable, I do it all the time. Request an aisle seat and it will be more comfortable.

That's very considerate of you! To be honest I think that size 24 is normal. There are lots of people I'd hate to sit next to, not because they are large but because they stick their elbows out, bash into everyone at every opportunity, treat people like an obstacle... whereas I would be happy to sit next to you, because you seem like a very considerate person.
