The only boil I've had that has made a hole is a staph infection. The staph infection does produce swelling like a big spider bite or boil and is hot to touch. My arm felt like it was on fire. Put hydrogen peroxide on it to reduce bacterial infection. Check your body for anymore spots. I would definitely go check with a healthcare provider if another one does comes up! If you had put more of a description up of how it started then I would be able to tell you more information on whether or not you could have a staph infection. I'm not saying you have it, but that is a possibility, especially since CA-nosocomial Staph infections are spreading rapidly (Community acquired). If this isn't a staph infection, I would recommend keeping the area clean (with hydrogen peroxide) and using antibiotic ointment with a large bandaid. Do not let antiperspirant around the sore. I wouldn't recommend using astringent because you do want the wound to heal as fast as it can, with as little scarring as possible. If you use astringent, it will dry the edges of the sore up, making it hard to heal properly. Hope this helps in eliminating the problem, healing it, or catching it if there is another one! Good luck!

If it left a hole, you need to clean it out, and pack the hole with a gauze called umbilical tape. Change it everyday until you can't get the guaze in it anymore.
The hole needs to heal from the inside out. If the outside closes first, you can end up with an abcess and things will get much worse. It would not be a bad idea to let a doc look at it.

Are you sure it doesn't need stitches? Sounds huge! Yes, I'd apply something to dry it out several times a day. Yes, I think that's normal--boils usually have roots to them. But yes, unless you see sign of infection, I'd treat it with general first aid. At first sign of pinkness or swelling, neosporin. But until then, just keep it drying.

Not an expert, but been there, done that.
Do you know that the dr. has a pill that stops boils in their tracks in the early stages or later?

I jus had one removed about 6 mo ago. It kept reocurring for over a year. My dr. said it was a staph infection, it did not get better with antibiotics though. It got worse, left a hole but then it started to grow out of it. Got it from shaving with a razor that I used to keep in the shower. It was surgically removed, and called a cellulitis something in the pathology report. It was red, painful, itchy and caused pain in my pit and arm. Dr gave me a shot of antibiotic to help. Scar is still there...jus as nasty as eva. Good luck and go to the dr and get an antibiotic.

Go to a dermatologist.
did you get stung by something and have a reaction. I had something similiar that look like it would fill up with puss and air and would pop it to settle but never had a cavity but I was fine. But it could be a totally different situation.
