There are four main reasons people seek religion.
1. Fear, be it subconcious or very much in their face such as a car accident.
2. It is easier to be religious than non-religious in the US.
3. Brain injuries.
4. A false sense of security.

That some would cite brain injury as a reason some would believe is evidence of their own irrationally held beliefs. Would they not view it as bigotry if a Christian made the same assertion about them. Do they cite any statistical evidence? Of course not, because it doesn't exist and what is worse is they know it but desperately manufacture myths in an attempt to excuse themself from the responsibility that comes with faith.

I actually said the sinner's prayer to prove that it was all fake.
But even that tiny bit of submission was enough for God to start working on my heart. I prayed that in the morning and by that after noon, I suddenly started thinking about things in a different light. Suddenly being right all the time didn't matter so much; keeping peace meant more to me, and most important, I started to have HOPE!
HOPE was something so alien to me that it almost hurt my mind to think of it.
I started to hope that God was really there; that He was really interested in me as a person; that I hadn't already screwed up my life so badly at the age of 19 that even He couldn't help me.
I started to believe in Him just out of the hope that He existed, and in time, He proved to me over and over that He really does!
Thank you Jesus for every thing you have done for me in my life! Thank yo so much!

All Christians are former atheists.
We are all born atheist. We are taught religion. Some will sign up on their own.

I am not sure if I can say that I was quite Atheist. I did not believe in any deity, but I had doubt. And the doubt was always involving that if there was any deity, He would be God of Abraham.
Hunger for His Word. Hunger for more of Jesus brought me to my Lord's arms.

I was dragged to church until I could see it as a lie...at about 9 years of age. After that, they didn't want to take me because I'd make such a big deal out of it, or get in debates with clergy after the service.
