You think most people would want their kids to know these kinds of things for the future. Unless people want their kids to go out and kill, lie, envy, cheat on their partners, and disrespect their parents for the rest of their lives. Oh no, I would much rather learn to do stuff like factor functions that I will never us again in the real world...

I have not been taught these things at all in school. Hmmm...maybe it is because it has to do with the fact that it ties in with the Ten Commandments. Those people who say common sense obviously haven't taken a look around. The US has common sense...oh please.

All ten? Really? There are no other gods, keep the sabbath?
If you need to teach the ten c's to keep kids from killing and stealing then you aren't doing your job. This is for teachers and parents.

"Why not teach the Ten Commandments in school?"
Because it is illegal to do so.
You say, "You think most people would want their kids to know these kinds of things for the future. Unless people want their kids to go out and kill, lie, envy, cheat on their partners, and disrespect their parents for the rest of their lives"
You are an idiot. Morals do not come from god and religion. If they did, explain to me how priest end up still molesting children or why the majority of prisoner are religious? They know the 10 commandments after all and it didn't make a difference. You religious people need to get past this idea, because it is simply untrue.

And the witch trials at Salem were a shining moment in religious history?
Ethics can be taught without religion. Do you want the 10 Commandments, the Nine Noble Virtues, the Koran, the Talmud, sayings of Buddha all taught? Or just what you wish?

First reason not to teach the 10 commandments for us to obey today is because Paul in his letter to Colossi said the Law of Moses (the 10 commandments plus sacrificial laws of Moses) were fulfilled and nailed to the cross when Jesus died. He said it is finished.. The old law was finished to never be binding on later people. The 10 commandments are not in the New Testament even once because they were not a part of grace.
Nine of the ideas in the 10 Commandments are also taught in the New Testament, but we are not under the official Jewish commandments. We were freed from the bondage of the old Law.
EDIT: I personally wish that an introduction to all religions be taught in school and not just the atheist religion that teaches against creation. Only the atheist religion is allowed to be taught.

If the parents really love their children they should. I am a sunday school teacher, even if parents don't like to teach their kids, We does. And who says it was a bore?
Yearly, our sunday school is increasing with the number of students eventhough their parents is not a believer. If they know the rules, they will manage to make the right decisions on their own.
Maybe they didn't like to teach this stuff because some of them were really disobeying it. In our school we have a bible group, that was like just chatting with your friends but the topic is the bible itself.

The first 2 or three are religious in nature. Envy drives our economy, hate to break it to you. Lying is fine in certain circumstances. Not all parents deserve respect. Those that do will get it. The ten arbitrary commandments Christians picked out of the 613 Jews have are useless and have no place in school.

Well, as most Christians say the Old Testament is not our law anymore, unless you want to teach them that stoning each other is ok, I'd say there are better means of teaching your kids morality. How about spend some time with them instead of depending on the schools, an educational system, to raise your child for you.

Good point. There are those that don't want to hear about God, Christ, Gods will, and direction given by God. As such, they feel compelled to omit things related to God. Some say they are offended by such things...give me a break. Do they avoid driving past a Church? Do they go home and have a good cry if they hear something about God? Odd that they don't have the same feelings about Islam. You know, Islam/Muslim, the same faith of the 9/11 terrorists. I guess they wouldn't want to disrespect such as these. WOW. Giving a 5th. grade kid rubbers is OK but teaching him not to steal is a bad thing??? Again---WOW.

Richard Dawkins citation #2 (I want to get to 5 tonight!)
"Many of us saw religion as harmless nonsense. Beliefs might lack all supporting evidence but, we thought, if people needed a crutch for consolation, where's the harm? September 11th changed all that. Revealed faith is not harmless nonsense, it can be lethally dangerous nonsense. Dangerous because it gives people unshakeable confidence in their own righteousness. Dangerous because it gives them false courage to kill themselves, which automatically removes normal barriers to killing others. Dangerous because it teaches enmity to others labelled only by a difference of inherited tradition. And dangerous because we have all bought into a weird respect, which uniquely protects religion from normal criticism. Let's now stop being so damned respectful!"

Because they are of a religious nature and religion of any kind is prohibited in public schools.
The Constitution guarantees the separation of church and state.
Not everyone holds to the christian god or beliefs.... Teaching these in school would be an endorsement of the christian faith.....
These type of things should be kept in the home and church...period.
