I was raised Mormon but never went on a mission.

It is considered an honor for the faithful to serve a mission. You do not have to go though there is a great deal of social and family pressure to serve.

Hi friend. Mormon men are strongly encouraged to go on a mission, but are not forced or required to do so. For Mormon women, a mission is completely optional.

My mission has been a long one, started in 1954 and is ongoing, there is no rest until the work is done, for the living and the dead!

No one has to go on a mission. It is completely voluntary. It is strongly encouraged, however, and is dependent on what your life circumstances are. Most people go because they really want to and are excited to share what they believe.

It might be better for you to go to LDS Social Activities and meet some young men who have already returned from their two year Missions. That might be a more productive use of the time you spend socializing. Trying to socialize with a Mormon Missionary who is on another continent, while he is on an LDS Mission, is not going to be possible. Rather than put your life on hold for two years, it would make sense to socialize with Mormons who are your same approximate age. Non-Mormons are more than welcome to go to the fun activities that local Wards put together for the Young Single Adults. You are most certainly invited, and you are invited to Church on Sunday as well, of course.

nope. It is totally voluntary. In fact they have "raised the bar" so now they really only want people who really want to be there and who have repented and tried to be worthy to go out. They don't want people to go out to get a testimony; they want them to go out to get a testimony.
All young men who are worthy are encouraged to go though. Young women are also welcome to go on a mission if they choose. They don't leave until they are 21 though. Young men can leave at 19.

well, if your not passionate about it then you probably shouldn't go. It is an honor to be allowed to go, not a requirement that people go mindlessly. Liek going to college, everyone expects you to, but you have to prepare well enough to be accepted. You have to meet certain standards and be willing to live according to the requirements.

It's completely voluntary. Men go for 2 yrs and women for 18 mos. I think it would be grueling, exciting, and quite exciting.

It is never a requirement, although it is heavily encouraged; mostly because there are a lot of blessings that come from humbling yourself and devoting two years of your life to God.

I think it has to be approved by the mucky-mucks. And girls only have to go for 18 months. Score!
