I was never taught much religion when I was younger and now I feel that I need it in my life. I want to be Christian but I just don't even understand what I am supposed to do. I really don't want to go to church because I have Social Anxiety Disorder and I get extremely nervous around people, even if they are welcoming.

I never believed in religion. Thats was till I came to know about Islam.
Ofcourse, I cant believe what I do just because I am told to. I have reverted to Islam and the reasons are many.
Islam is the only religion which has the true concept of God. All other religions worship either human beings or clay statues. These have created god, while in fact, God is our Creator. Great difference.
Islam upholds the dignity of women. The so called "degradation" of women is only a media hype. IF you read the Qu'ran you will understand what I'm saying. Prophet Muhammad said : "The best of you are those who are best to their wives." He also said :"Paradise lies under the feet of the mother."
There are numerous scientific facts mentioned in the Qur'an, for example, the earth is round (not flat), the sun will extinguish after a certain period of time, living things are created from moslty water, there is a barrier between the sea (salty and sweet), big bang theory, and many many more. This was 1400 years ago when there was nothing like science!
The Qur'an says :
If you want to prove this book wrong, find just one contradiction in it.
Till date, no one has been able to find a single contradiction, whereas ALL the other religious scriptures have tons of contradictions! Surely, a book revealed by God cant have a contradiction. This is the falsification test of the Qur'an which science uses today fpr many theories.
We believe in the Day of Judgment, when everyone will be questioned abou their short life on earth.
Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world despite the great propaganda against it. Dozens of christian and catholic priests and saints enter the religion, but you will hardly find an islamic scholar leaving the religion.
The Qur'an says :
'The religion in the sight of God is Islam."
Thus, if you live in this age and period, the religion to follow is Islam.
There is immense peace, happiness and tranquility in islam.

You can be saved,and become a Christian by belief and accepting Jesus into your life. The reason you go to church, is really to have fellowship with other people... You can have a relationship with God, pray and read some of the bible. Not alot just maybe start with one Chapter. I would suggest I John Chapter 1.

Start by reading the gospels @ home and praying. Maybe ask just one Christian to your home for this time of study. Build up to church,if you are nervous. social Anxiety Disorder is real. The Bible says nothing is impossible w/ God. He can heal/help. God Bless!(Read Acts 2:38-9 for the plan of salvation)

I was in your situation a couple months ago. I REALLY didn't want to go to church either, but it isn't bad at all. You don't have to talk to anyone if you dont want to, you can sit in the back, in the corner if you want. People will want you to sit with them, but just tell them you would feel more comfortable int he back. Once church starts you won't really have to worry about anyone. Its jsut about you and God. ANYWAY, to become Christian you need to realize that you are a sinner. But you can be forgiven for your sins. Pray to God and repent for your sins and accept him as your personal savior. You should get a bible if you dont have one, but in the mean while, you can use the internet. I use bibleresources.com. I suggest the New International Version. It is easy to understand. Start by reading John and Matthew. Read a little bit at a time so you can understand it. Try your best to go to church, becasue it is important to be around other Christians. Don't ever think of being religious. For what? You want to be a goody fella? Join some NGOs, it will be better.
But if you want to know God and be at peace with Him, than join a Christian Church by all means.
You need it. I can see your resistance.

Consider almighty God seriously.
Learn about Him,
Learn His NAME.
(Exodus 6:3) And I used to appear to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob as God Almighty, but as respects my name Jehovah I did not make myself known to them.
Learn that Jesus is NOT God, but his son.
(John 5:19) Therefore, in answer, Jesus went on to say to them: “Most truly I say to YOU, The Son cannot do a single thing of his own initiative, but only what he beholds the Father doing. For whatever things that One does, these things the Son also does in like manner.
Treat the whole Bible as a whole. Prophecies in the Old Testament point to the New Testament.
Know that the Bible can
be both literal and symbolic.
Never take just one scripture in isolation to prove a point.
Example; John 1;1...the removal of just one letter...'a'...is used to try and prove that Jesus IS God himself.
Jesus IS...a...god...a spiritual being. Just like Satan is ...a...god...
Neither is Jehovah God.
(2 Corinthians 4:4) among whom the god of this system of things has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, that the illumination of the glorious good news about the Christ, who is the image of God, might not shine through.
Satan is the...god...of this system...
No one tries to prove, from this scripture, that Satan IS God.
Not many "KNOW" this scripture.

well you don't have to go to church i recommend you get the jesus bible. it is a christian bible and it is easier to understand. pray something like " god i know i have messed up some in my life and i realized your son died on the cross for me and he forgives all my sins and i believe in the saving grace through his blood so jesus take my heart and make it knew and make it like you" something along those lines if you can find a local pastor to call and talk over the phone with them if you have anymore questions good luck with your amazing journey that awaits you.

well, ignore those people above me who are saying bad stuff about christianity. they are just on this forume every night bashing every single religious people in their sight.
Christianity just follows a simple philosophy that includes the following:
First of all, the universe was created by a force or being that is beyond the scope of the universe. (most refer to it as God)
Secondlly, we live by the philosophy preached by Jesus Christ, such as loving your neighbor, being peaceful, helping others, and sharing Christ's philosophy with others.
Thats the simple 2 minute explanation of it.

You can be Christian without attending church! Read the Bible and other Christian literature. You could also possibly find an understanding clergy person who would talk to you one-on-one.
